Sienna turned to face me. “You’re unusually quiet, Sebastián.”

“What do you expect me to say?”

“Whatever is on your mind,” she replied. “Isn’t that how we usually play this game?”

“Very well,” I said, wanting to choose my words wisely. “I don’t feel as though I know you at all.”

“Poppycock,” she said, “I’m still the same person I’ve always been.”

“A person I know little of.”

“You’re blowing this way out of proportion, my love.”

“You can fly for God’s sake.”

“An added bonus,” she said with a smirk. “But a gift I lost for a considerable amount of time.”

“Did you not trust me enough to tell me you were some sort of hybrid or weren’t you aware?”

“Of course, I know what I am, but I chose to keep my own counsel to protect myself and my fledglings.”

“I would keep your secrets until the end of time.”

“Yes, I know, but I didn’t want to put you in the position where you would be forced to lie.”

“But why?” I felt hurt, betrayed even. “All those years we spent together, and I had no idea what you were capable of.”

“My situation with the vampires is a difficult one to explain, and had my remaining powers been discovered, and indeed powers re-emerging, the covenant which kept me alive would be nullified and I’d have been put to death.”

“Why would our kind consider you to be such a threat?”

“I was considered the strongest witch alive and therefore a threat.”

“If you were so powerful, why didn’t you fight them?”

“That’s a story for another day.”

“I want to know, Sienna. I deserve to know.”

“I agreed to be turned to keep my descendants safe.”

“There must have been more to it than that. You don’t back down from any fight. That’s not the Sienna I know.”

“I’m just one being, Sebastián, and not strong enough to fight off a whole army. Doing so would have caused a war that would have spilled over into the human world, and you know as well as I do, the supernatural world must remain hidden.”

I tried to steal her gaze but failed. “There is more to this than you’re admitting, Sienna.”

“You were always suspicious, my young one, but there is no more to say.”

“Time will tell, Sienna, but mark my words, there is more to this and one day, you’ll trust me enough to reveal the full story.” I heard Adriel call out, which brought that line of conversation to a close. “She’s calling for us.”

“Then let’s not waste any further time with this line of conversation and go meet the angels.”
