I spent some time changing my top layer to something more fitted and putting my boots on.

Then I drank some coffee and fiddled with the radio.

Then I checked my email and drank some more coffee.

Then I googled dragons in the Austin area, because why the hell not? Oh, and I drank some more coffee.

My dragon search got me absolutely nothing useful, but you never knew who was putting what up on the internet these days.

And that killed about five minutes total, leaving another fifty-five with me and the guy who smelled like sheets I wanted to wallow in.

Looked like that thing I had for citrus soap and essence of Aiden, the clean-musk scent I’d imprinted on my brain when he’d been inches away, wasn’t a temporary attack of overactive hormones.

Not a pleasant discovery, especially since we were in a small, confined space.

I changed the radio station again, but Aiden reached over and flipped it off.

“Fuck you.”

He arched an eyebrow. “Fuck, you. I’m driving.”

No argument there. I always controlled Bertha’s radio in the rare instances anyone else rode with me. Not that I’d admit as much.

I considered my various complaints and landed on: “You should have called me. I could have met you there.”

“You wouldn’t have come.”

True.

I tapped my finger against my knee, realized I was doing it, and then grabbed a fidget stone from my go bag. I once heard someone—a kid in high school, sophomore year, I think—call it a worry stone.

But that was BS; I wasn’t worried. I was fidgeting. Because I fidgeted.

Also, I gave that guy a black eye.

With a quick glance at me, Aiden said, “Maybe we should skip the coffee stop.”

No more coffee?

“Quit growling. You’re the one who’s all pissed off I wasted time coming to pick you up.”

I wasn’t growling. I wasn’t a dog.

I needed more caffeine.

I rubbed my fidget stone.

I wanted my fucking coffee.

“Fine.” He gave me some side-eye. “We’ll stop for coffee. I left food and a bottle of his favorite tequila. Hopefully that’s keeping him occupied.”

“You left the drunk dragon who you’re worried about because he’s drunk with a bottle of tequila.”

Again with the side-eye. “It’s not like he doesn’t have access to liquor. The guy’s got a basement full of whisky. He owns a local distillery. Whisky is sort of his thing. And I was hoping the novelty of tequila and munchies would keep him grounded.”

Munchies? Like the loose cannon with wings and magical fire was a kid who’d smoked a bunch of weed.

And this great strategist was the guy I’d agreed to partner with.

Temporarily partner with.

But then I replayed his words. Keep him grounded? “He’s been flying.”

Aiden let out an irritated breath. “I guess that’s what drunk dragons do. What the hell do I know? I heard his woman had died, and I went out to check on him. I found him cruising the area above his cabin. He did an erratic fly-by and when the whisky fumes about knocked me over, I realized he was inebriated. When I
