Chapter Eighteen

Tomas started swearing as he and the rest of his people filed out the door. Finnian grabbed his pack, Lizeth grabbed hers, and they followed. She was now extremely glad she’d packed their things up as soon as she got there.

“You’d better ride on my pack, Sorlin.” Lizeth knew Scruff could run faster than any bunch of humans, but she didn’t want them to get separated.

He jumped to the top of her pack, dug his claws in, and stayed silent.

“This way!” Tomas and Maurial took the lead and raced through the forest. The sound of armored people following echoed in a now otherwise silent forest.

Lizeth ran alongside Finnian and caught a glimpse of his face; he was worried. Very worried. Those knights could be after the gang they were now running with or them. Which was something she would not be bringing up to Tomas or Maurial.

“I think they might be chasing us into a trap.” Finnian kept his voice low so probably only Tomas, Maurial, and Lizeth heard it. “We need to break north.”

Tomas glanced around him. “Are you sure? Janus usually can tell these things.”

“It might not be in what you’ve heard, but I’m an expert in the forest. We are being herded.”

Lizeth felt Scruff dig deeper into her pack. She didn’t blame him. In this, she trusted Finnian. A quick glance told her Janus wasn’t even looking around but had dropped further behind the rest.

“One way is as good as another. Lead.” Tomas held up his hand and motioned for the rest to follow Finnian. Finnian took off and the rest of the group followed.

Lizeth moved in closer to him. “Are we being herded?”

“Yes. And those knights came up fast. Unless they followed the group that came from the village, they were already out looking for someone.” He kept the ‘for us’ silent as he changed direction. “To be honest, I’m surprised that those knights can run as well as they can.”

“Ah, it’s the magic armor.” Maurial said as she easily pulled up alongside them. “New invention from the empress’s folks. Light, but still able to do the job of protecting what’s inside it. Since we’re so close to the capital, we’re the first to see it. Lucky us.” She scowled. “It’s been out for a few months and that armor has brought down more good people than any weapon.”

Lizeth schooled her face to look suitably impressed, but that was a terrifying concept. Not for the same reasons Maurial thought though. There was no such thing in her time. The armor in the palace from the Laiandran empire was extremely heavy. She and her sisters had tested it with painful repercussions when they were kids.

The other, almost more frightening, thought—the amount of magic needed to do something like change the properties of metal plate to such a degree—was beyond contemplation. It was not only unheard of, but according to her history studies, it had never even been seriously contemplated.

“Aye, that’s the look. It scares the pants off of me too.
