Chapter Fifteen
Going Against the Fabric Grain
“God you’re turning out to be a blessing to me,” I said, getting lost in her eyes.
“You wanna come over tonight and celebrate?”
“I wanna celebrate with you love.” I pushed her bangs back. “But in a different way. Look, I’ve begun to feel a certain type of way about you and I know you feel the same for me. I want us to start spending quality time together to really see where this is heading.”
“I thought that’s what we were doing.”
“Yeah, but we’ve been doing a whole lotta other stuff too. Look, our relationship didn’t start out on the purest of paths and that’s my fault. I kind of let my desire for you govern my actions. And though I won’t apologize for it, I will attempt to correct it. So, I think we should chill out on the sex.”
Skyla’s mouth curled to one corner and she immediately gave me a look of wariness while slightly scooting away.
“Is this new found restraint because your significant other has suddenly solved her bedroom issues?” she asked.
“No, no… Look, it’s like I said. I want to continue to see you, even more than I had been, but I don’t want our physical relationship to skew our judgment.”
Her eyes searched mine for truth.
“If you want to end this Jonathan, then just say it. But, don’t play games with me.”
“Love, are you listening to me? I’m not playing games. I really, really dig you and I’m trying to make things right between us. I care for you deeply Skyla and I want, no need, for you to trust me. I never want you to feel like I’m using you. It would just kill me if you ever lost that sparkle in your eyes when you look at me or ever regarded me with disdain.”
“As long as you’re honest with me, I would never do that Jonathan.”
I kissed the back of her hand.
“Well I wanna make sure,” I said.
Trust returned to her eyes.
“Okay, I see where you’re coming from and I can respect it,” she said.
“Good. Listen, there’s an exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago called The Sacred and the Profane. I think we should check it out tomorrow. Can you get away for a couple of hours during the day?”
“Sure. I love art museums and galleries.”
“Then that’s another thing we have in common.”
I pulled her into my arms and sucked and kissed her lips. I tried to stick my tongue in her mouth but she wouldn’t let me.
“Uh uh. If we’re going to go on the don’t do it diet, then we’ll have to cut out the snacks,” she said.
“I didn’t agree to that. In fact, I didn’t even say when this sex diet will begin.”
“You have to agree or it’s gonna lead to a failed diet.”
“I’ll take my chances.”
“Well, what about me? Don’t I have a say in this?”
“Not really.”
“We’ll see about that….”
###
Later that night, I lay in bed staring at the ceiling and thinking about the pact me and Skyla made and struggled at the mere thought of it.
