CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Kendrick walked into Sade’s office and she wasn’t there. That was perfect because he wanted to surprise her. He had gone to Olive Garden and got her favorite; Seafood Alfredo with warm bread sticks and Caesar salad. He set the food on the desk just as she entered.
She was talking a mile a minute on her phone. From the sounds of it, she was making plans to put up a petition around the city to keep the center open. If she got a certain number of signatures, she had a chance. Kendrick waited patiently for her to get off the phone. When she finally did, a huge smile graced her face.
“Baby you’ll never believe what just happened.” She said with the biggest smile and excitement in her voice.
“No, but I can guess.” He met her halfway in the middle of the room. The two indulged in a sweet kiss before coming up for air.
“Mmm baby. So I got the city’s approval to put on a petition. I have a chance to keep the center open!” She hugged him tightly around the neck.
“That’s great baby...” He hugged her back. “Wow that means I can tell Asia not to worry.” He said to himself.
“What?” She didn’t catch that.
“Nothing Ma. I’m so happy and proud of you baby.” He hugged her again.
Buying a community center for her was going to be a surprise. Suddenly, he thought of her reaction to him getting her a new building crossed his mind. Knowing her, she may have took it as he didn’t have faith in her.
“Aww you brought me lunch! This is perfect timing babe. I’m soo hungry.” She dug into the food. The way she was eating led him to believe that she hadn’t eaten all day.
“Have you eaten today babe?” He was a little irritated about the question. When she wasn’t pregnant, she had a habit of not eating. She would be ripping and running all day that she’d forget.
“Yeah baby. I had a mini muffin, a banana and some water.” She looked up from her meal. That was a little hard to believe for him.
“Baby, I understand the center is a priority for you…” He walked over to her. “But our son should be your first priority. I need you to eat. I want a healthy baby.” He rubbed her stomach.
“I’m sorry babe. I just have been so wrapped up in work. I been calling homeless shelters, leaving the mayor messages nonstop, setting up new activities for the kids, making budget cuts-” he put his hand up to halt her. Something she said caught his ear.
“Homeless shelters?” He got up and went over to her mini fridge and got them both a water.
“Oh my goodness, baby I didn’t tell you.” She chewed what was in her mouth. “I found that boy Zach on the stairs sleeping this morning. I asked him, why he was sleeping there and he pushed me away. Told me to leave him alone, he said he doesn’t know why people care.
