CHAPTER ELEVEN
KENNEDY
Since my mother was too old to be in some club partying, she made her own little celebration at her house. She still stayed in the same house on the south side that she had back then. As I slowly walked into the house, I saw that absolutely nothing had changed in three years. Pictures of me, from all ages, were still all over the wall. That ugly ass picture of me at junior prom, wearing a dress way too big because my father refused to allow me to wear something clingy, was still the biggest picture on the wall. My date, Carl, the lead saxophonist in the band at the time, with huge crater-like pimples on his face and coke-bottle glasses still made me cringe when I looked at him, holding me like that moment was the closest he would ever get to a girl in his life.
“Oooh!” My mama squealed at a high-pitch, hugged me and held onto me for dear life right there in the hallway. I held her tight, and as I did, it felt like time had stood still. For seconds, I just enjoyed the feeling of her cheek against mine and her scent in my nose.
“I missed you so much,” I cried.
“I missed you too, baby.”
We were so busy crying and rocking that we didn’t notice Kayla, who wanted my mother’s undivided attention.
“Grandma! Grandma!” She even had the nerve to suck her teeth. “Hi, Grandma, dang!”
I have really got to teach this lil’ girl how to watch her damn mouth.
“Kayla!” King warned her as he held her in his arms, standing close behind me.
“Oh, leave my grandbaby alone!” my mother said in a weird baby voice.
“That’s what’s wrong with her now,” King told her.
“Oh hush.” My mother waved her hand dismissively as she took Kayla from him. She straddled her on her hip and then took me by the hand. “Both of my babies are here! I can’t believe it! Come on in! I got some food waiting for you.”
Even though I wasn’t looking forward to seeing my father, I was expecting to see him. Last night, I told my mother to go ahead and invite him over so that I could kill two birds with one stone, but as we left the hall and entered the living room, I saw that it was empty. King’s eyes found mine and they were full of empathy and compassion, but I didn’t need it. My father hadn’t found anything important enough to set aside his anger in order to be there for me, not even the birth of Kayla or my incarceration, so his absence today wasn’t a total shocker. However, it was noticeable, and it created a weird tension that my mother attempted to talk over.
“C’mon on. Don’t you worry,” she told me, still leading me through the house by the hand.
“I got this hot food ready for y’all. We gon’ sit down and eat like a family, because we are family.
