IT WAS SATURDAY morning and Jody planned to sleep in and then drink coffee at her leisure. Her phone jingled before she could even get out of bed.

Hardy. What did he want?

Brushing hair out of her eyes, she picked up her phone. “It’s my day off and nothing can be so important that I would have to work today.”

“You haven’t had any coffee yet, have you?”

“No.”

“I hate to wake you up, but I got a call from the Bell County DA. Heather Holden is asking for you.”

Jody sat up in bed. “What? Why would she want to see me?”

“I don’t know, but he also said that Mrs. Holden is there, too, and she’s causing a scene. He asked if you could come since the girl asked for you.”

“Why doesn’t he go?”

“You know a DA is not going to do that. It’s showing favoritism.”

“And sending an ADA is not?”

Jody lost the battle and thirty minutes later she was on the road to the rehab center. On the way she called Mr. Holden to make sure he knew what was going on. She had no authority to release his daughter—that would have to come from the DA himself. Mr. Holden didn’t answer, so she left a voice mail.

The rehabilitation center was in Temple and seemed to be in the middle of nowhere. A couple of big live oaks shaded the plain rectangle building made of Austin stone, but there were no flowers or anything to make the place look inviting. She couldn’t imagine Mr. Holden agreeing to this place that looked more like a prison. The windows were high and narrow but at least there were no bars that she could see. The center sat on several acres and it was peaceful and quiet, just what an individual needed to get off drugs. A water fountain near the door seemed out of place. A statue of an angel stood in the center, holding a water pitcher in her hands. Water poured from it. It gurgled behind Jody as she went into the building.

A lady sat at a desk in a large nondescript foyer. She wore a gray dress with the rehab center’s name on her left pocket. Her hair was also gray and curled into a bun at the back of her head. She looked at Jody through wire-rimmed glasses. “Can I help you?”

“I’m Jody Rebel. Heather Holden is asking for me.”

“Sister Carter, the supervisor, will speak to you shortly. Just take a seat.”

“Ms. Rebel, Ms. Rebel.” Karen Holden ran up to her and grabbed her arm. Obviously Mrs. Holden was waiting to see Heather. “You need to do something. I can’t get anyone to listen to me. Heather is not made for this kind of life and I know you can get her out of here.”

She removed her arm from the woman’s grasp. “We went through all this over a week ago. Your daughter committed a crime, and instead of going to jail, she’s spending time here until she’s clean.
