Cora and I meet in the cafeteria the next day to plan.
âI want to get to the parking lot as close to midnight as possible,â I say while I unwrap my sandwich. âSo, we both need to sneak out. My problem is my parents have cameras around the outside of our house. Thereâs a doorbell camera, and a camera showing the area right outside our back door. Thereâs also a camera attached to a motion sensor light on the right side of the house. My parents get alerts on their phones whenever thereâs activity. Theyâll know if I leave the house using the front or back door.â
âDo the windows have cameras, too?â Cora asks.
âNo. Thank goodness. Thereâs a window in the laundry room that lets out to the side of the house without any cameras. If I can climb out that way, I should be able to avoid being seen. But if my parents catch me sneaking out . . . I donât want to think about how much trouble Iâll be in. I also have to make sure Shay and Theo donât see me because they might rat me out.â I sigh. âWhat about you? Will it be easy for you to sneak out?â
âIt should be,â Cora says. âMy parents are super low-tech. They donât have cameras or anything.â
âLucky.â
âI can ride my bike there,â Cora says.
âMe, too,â I say. âThatâs another thing Iâll have to set up ahead of time. We usually leave our bikes in the garage, but my parents will get an alert if I open that door late at night. Iâll have to hide my bike in the bushes or something after school.â
The good news is the beachâand the parking lot where the carnival took placeâis maybe a mile from my house. So, once I get on my bike and start riding, it wonât take me that long to get there.
âWhat will we do once weâre there?â Cora asks.
âIâm not totally sure,â I admit. âBefore this time jump happened to me, I never believed in supernatural stuff. But now, especially after reading that library book, it must be real. Iâm pretty sure the time jump happened at midnight, and thatâs the moment the full moon was at its highest. It must mean something. Thereâs a reason full moons are a big deal in the fantasy books I read. Thereâs something magical about them.â
âBut werenât you in your basement right before midnight?â Cora asks. âNot the parking lot?â
âYeah,â I say. âBut I donât think thereâs anything magical about my basement. Iâve lived in my house my whole life, through lots of full moons, and nothing like this has ever happened before.â
Cora nods.
Do I really think showing up in an empty parking lot in the middle of the night is going to fix everything? Iâm not sure, but itâs the only idea I have right now, and I have to do something other than read books and articles. Even if I walk away with one more clue to get me closer to the truth, itâll be worth it.
