Fifteen

Cora and I meet in the cafeteria the next day to plan.

“I want to get to the parking lot as close to midnight as possible,” I say while I unwrap my sandwich. “So, we both need to sneak out. My problem is my parents have cameras around the outside of our house. There’s a doorbell camera, and a camera showing the area right outside our back door. There’s also a camera attached to a motion sensor light on the right side of the house. My parents get alerts on their phones whenever there’s activity. They’ll know if I leave the house using the front or back door.”

“Do the windows have cameras, too?” Cora asks.

“No. Thank goodness. There’s a window in the laundry room that lets out to the side of the house without any cameras. If I can climb out that way, I should be able to avoid being seen. But if my parents catch me sneaking out . . . I don’t want to think about how much trouble I’ll be in. I also have to make sure Shay and Theo don’t see me because they might rat me out.” I sigh. “What about you? Will it be easy for you to sneak out?”

“It should be,” Cora says. “My parents are super low-tech. They don’t have cameras or anything.”

“Lucky.”

“I can ride my bike there,” Cora says.

“Me, too,” I say. “That’s another thing I’ll have to set up ahead of time. We usually leave our bikes in the garage, but my parents will get an alert if I open that door late at night. I’ll have to hide my bike in the bushes or something after school.”

The good news is the beach—and the parking lot where the carnival took place—is maybe a mile from my house. So, once I get on my bike and start riding, it won’t take me that long to get there.

“What will we do once we’re there?” Cora asks.

“I’m not totally sure,” I admit. “Before this time jump happened to me, I never believed in supernatural stuff. But now, especially after reading that library book, it must be real. I’m pretty sure the time jump happened at midnight, and that’s the moment the full moon was at its highest. It must mean something. There’s a reason full moons are a big deal in the fantasy books I read. There’s something magical about them.”

“But weren’t you in your basement right before midnight?” Cora asks. “Not the parking lot?”

“Yeah,” I say. “But I don’t think there’s anything magical about my basement. I’ve lived in my house my whole life, through lots of full moons, and nothing like this has ever happened before.”

Cora nods.

Do I really think showing up in an empty parking lot in the middle of the night is going to fix everything? I’m not sure, but it’s the only idea I have right now, and I have to do something other than read books and articles. Even if I walk away with one more clue to get me closer to the truth, it’ll be worth it.
