Chapter Seven
Sophie smiled at Samantha over the top of her fan. âMy, my, Sam. It seems youâve done the impossible.â
Samantha arched her brows, a smile tugging at her lips. She hadnât stopped smiling for nearly an hour now, ever since that strange encounter with the marquess. Theyâd parted ways when Samantha followed her family as they made the rounds, greeting acquaintances and making introductions.
She hadnât spotted him through this thick crowd since. But dancing was set to begin, and she knew without a doubt that he would find her.
A man like the marquess would not forget about a lady to whom heâd promised a dance.
Sophie nodded straight ahead. âYou appear to have charmed the marquess. I knew he would find you just as irresistibly lovely as we do.â
Samantha laughed. âYouâre my sister so clearly youâre biased.â
Sophie grinned. âAnd what is the marquessâs excuse?â
Samantha blinked, following her sisterâs gaze. âHis excuse for what?â
Her sister leaned in close and lowered her voice until it was all but drowned out by the musicians. âHis stare is quite fixed and most decidedly determined,â Sophie murmured.
âIs it?â Sheâd meant to sound lighthearted but the words came out too breathless and airy as her gaze collided with Lord Longleyâs.
Goodness. Her mouth went dry and she nearly choked while trying to swallow. Sophie had not been exaggerating. The marquessâs stern features were set in hard lines as he stalked toward her through the crowd, his gaze unwavering.
He didnât appear angry, however. Not even irritated. No, this was something else altogether.
Determined, Sophie had said.
Yes, he definitely appeared to be that. But she didnât believe it was the determination in his eyes that had heat suffusing her skin and a blush creeping into her cheeks.
Nor did it explain why the crush in this ballroom seemed to fade away as he drew closer until there was only him. With his broad shoulders and long stride, he made her think of a powerful predator. And with his dark stare so focused on her, she had the most ridiculous notion that she was his prey.
Her heart gave an erratic kick and she let out a huff of irritation at her own overactive imagination.
âLooks like he only has eyes for you,â Sophie teased. âWhatever did you do to the poor man?â
Samantha shook her head, but before she could respond, he was standing before her, exchanging brief greetings with Raith and Tobias, while his gaze lingered on her.
The reason became clear as the first strains of a waltz filled the ballroom and Lord Longley offered her his hand to claim his dance.
âAny hints on what a prospective suitor might say at a moment such as this one, Lady Samantha?â he asked as he led her onto the dance floor to take their place among the other couples.
She just barely swallowed a laugh. His tone was just as serious as ever, but she was almost certain he was teasing her. âYou seem to be doing just fine without my assistance, Lord Longley.â
And indeed, when he pulled her into his arms and wrapped an arm about her waistâ¦
She let out a shaky exhale.
