He was pretty sure that no applied to a hell of a lot more than him brushing her hair. Whatever she’d been thinking, it’d built and grown until she’d looked ready to pop. And she had. That no erupted from her with enough force to have him step back. Even the dogs were sitting up, regarding her with wide eyes.

“I’m tired,” she whispered, wrapping her arms around her knees to rest her chin. “I’m sorry.”

It was a blatant dodge, but he should let it be and give her some space. Her head was the only visible part of Cassie in her massive robe cocoon and she looked so small and vulnerable that he couldn’t.

“You’re sure that’s all it is?” He hated not knowing what she was thinking. He’d no way to make it better. And, damn it all, he wanted to make it better—if he could. “We’re gonna be stuck here for a few more days, Cassie. Whatever’s eating at you, I’m game to listen.”

Her sigh was long and loud and bone-deep. But it wasn’t an outright no, so he sat opposite her on the edge of the coffee table and waited.

“Some things are best left unspoken.” She waved her hand—rather the arm of the too-big robe swung back and forth.

“Not if they’re twisting up your guts. Believe me, Cassie. I had to learn that one the hard way.” He wanted to reach for her hand.

She lifted her head and looked at him.

“We could take turns.” He shrugged. “I’ve got plenty to work through. Maybe we can help each other out? Let off some steam?”

She nibbled on the inside of her lip, her gaze narrowing just a bit.

“I’ll shower and you can think it over.” He stood. “No pressure.”

She continued to study him but didn’t say a word.

“You boys keep an eye on her. Help her brush her hair if she needs it.” He grinned, hoping to ease some of the tension. Before he closed the bedroom door, he thought he saw a ghost of a smile on her lips.

One whiff of the gingerbread bath gel and he was screwing the lid back on tight. Cassie had warned him. Whatever that smell was, it wasn’t gingerbread. Peppermint wasn’t his thing, but the scent was refreshing and clean. He scrubbed and rinsed and scrubbed again, giving her some time to consider his offer.

He turned off the faucets when the bathroom was foggy and warm. Yeah, he had clothes to wear, but that robe might be just the thing to relax Cassie. Once he was dry, he pulled on the Santa robe and ran his fingers through his hair. There was no making this look better but it was soft and thick. He might look like a damn fool, but he was warm.

When he stepped into the living room, he paused. “What do you think?” He spun slowly, for effect. “Can I pull it off?”

“I’ve never wanted my phone more than I do right this minute.” Cassie covered her mouth, but he could hear her laughing.
