Chapter Seventeen

Derek

It was all a lie. Every last thing I have been fed by others has been a lie.

Her story doesn’t line up with anything Amos had tried to tell me.

And you were stupid enough to believe him rather than trust in your mate.

I’m not going to argue with that.

I can feel my pulse as I tighten my fists. I can’t keep my arms crossed anymore so I drop them to my sides as they quake with irritation.

She didn’t move on and find some other guy, which is something I should have known since the pain never went away. Instead, she continued with her life with someone she came to trust in and became a success.

And here I was, living day to day and barely existing.

I am relieved she never found someone to replace me, but it doesn’t make me feel better knowing she has been out in the world without someone other than Spence for comfort.

She’s told us her side of the story. Now tell her yours.

“What do you mean by that?” Turning, I lean against the grill guard with my upper body, doing my damnedest not to touch her.

“B-before I came outside, Amos had said some stuff about mates and getting rid of you.” Her wide eyes look up at me. “How does he know you are a werewolf?”

“Fucking asshole.” Muttering to myself, I look at my truck before I answer her. “I don’t know, Anna. I feel like shit now since I believed him, but I don’t know how he would have any knowledge of me and my true nature.” Slamming my fist down on the hood of my truck doesn’t help to calm me. “I went out and bought this after he left me brokenhearted. I used all the money I had saved to put a good down payment on this.” I tap the hood.

She looks gun shy as though something is bothering her, and just as she is about to ask, her phone goes off once again.

“Are you sure you don’t
