Chapter 7
Riko woke with a jerk, his heart pounding so hard he thought it was about to explode. Sitting up, he placed one hand on his chest in a vain attempt to keep it in there. He kept his breathing quiet, searching the dimly lit room for whatever it was that had woken him.
Addi was by the door, fully dressed, pulling on her boots.
âWhere are you going?â The words came out harsher than he intended.
She glanced over at him as she put her coat on, and for a second he thought she was going to leave without answering him. But then she stilled, staring at the floor for a long moment before she turned toward him. Her eyes ran over his bare torso, almost like she was trying to commit him to memory, and then she said simply, âHome.â
He jumped out of bed and searched for his jeans, a sense of urgency he couldnât explain driving him. Itâs not like he didnât know where to find her. âHang on. Iâll walk you to your car.â
She waved him off. âThatâs not necessary, Riko. Itâs right across the street.â
Her voice was dispassionate. Her expression completely blank. Sheâd barely left his bed and she was already shutting him out.
And maybe she was right. He had nothing to offer her. Fuck, she didnât even know what he really was. Going any farther with this would only lead to another twenty years of loneliness and anger and pain for both of them. Maybe worse if his old manâs pack caught a whiff of what had happened here tonight. It was bad enough they already had her in their sights just because heâd seen her first when heâd gotten into town.
His wolf paced restlessly beneath his skin, already mourning her loss.
No. No. He couldnât just let her leave like this. Riko yanked up his pants and threw his hands out in front of him as she went for the door. âI said just hang on! Okay? Justâ¦just wait a minute. One damn minute.â He had a horrible premonition that if he let her walk out that door, he would never see her again. Which was stupid. It was a small town. Tiny, really. Where would she hide?
Addison stared at him, unmoving.
âIâm sorry.â He sighed and grabbed his boots, then looked around for his shirt. âI didnât mean to snap at you, Addi. Just wait for me. Please.â A strong sense of déjà vu went through him. Words heâd wanted to say so many times all those years ago, but never could.
âOkay,â she said quietly.
When he had himself as put together as he was gonna get, he joined her at the door. He put his hand on the knob but didnât open it. âAre you dating him?â Riko would slap himself if it wouldnât make him look like more of a fool than he already was. He didnât know where that had suddenly come from. Well, he did. He just hadnât planned on asking.
The mask fell from Addisonâs face as she looked up at him in confusion.
