When Cassandra’s carriage had disappeared, William continued standing there, deep in thought. He gave up trying to understand the reason for what he was about to do. He wanted Cassandra Greenwood and that was reason enough. She represented everything most desirable in a woman. When he had taken Charles’s wager, she had merely been the tantalising object of his lustful thoughts and he’d thought of little else but possessing her, but after giving it careful thought he’d quickly changed his mind.

Seducing gently reared virgins was not his style—he preferred the women he made love to to be experienced, sophisticated and undemanding of himself and his time, but that did not lessen his obsession with Cassandra in the least. The effect she had had on him then had been as unsettling as it was now, and he was unable to analyse the raw heat that ran through his veins whenever she was near him.

Since he had dispensed with his military career and returned to the responsibility of his inheritance, it was his duty to marry and provide an heir, a responsibility of which he had been constantly reminded from the day he learned of Robert’s death. And now, when he thought of Cassandra—lovely to look at, a temptress, enchanting and alluring—he wanted her badly. She had inflamed him and stirred his lust without intention. He smiled, for he could not blame her. Beauty, combined with charm and sweet innocence, would sway any man.

The fact that she had determinedly begun to oppose him—the reason for which remained a mystery to him—did not deter him. Had he not felt her body’s reaction, her desire for him when he had held her and kissed her? He did not have the slightest doubt that he would be able to lure her back into his arms. His mind made up, he turned and strode briskly back into the stables. His decision to make her his wife was one that brooked no further debate.
