My mother and I stood in the parking lot of the hospital next to her car. Her fidgety body language and sad eyes told me everything I needed to know. She wasn’t okay. None of us were. Seeing Loyalty and watching her slip through my fingers had me wanting to grab a strong drink. I was grateful for what she’d done for Neenah, because I wasn’t ready to lose her too.

“You gon’ be alright?” I asked her.

“Yes, are you?”

“I’m fine. Why would you ask me that?”

“You may think you’re hiding whatever it is that you’re going through well, but you’re not. I can see it all in your face, and I know a lot of it has to do with that girlfriend of yours.”

“She’s not my girlfriend anymore, and before you ask, no, I don’t want to talk about it.”

“You don’t have to. Let me just say this, and I’ll drop the entire thing. As long as I was around you, I never saw you like this over any female. She must really be special.”

“She is.”

“You love her?”

“Yeah, I do… but it doesn’t matter. I fucked it up.”

“If she loves you, she’ll listen to whatever it is you have to say eventually. She’s probably either mad or hurt right now. You just have to give her space and time. Those two things combined heal everything.”

“They healed how you felt for Bell?”

A blank expression came across her face and she diverted her attention to the cars passing by us. “Some wounds can’t be healed, Lourde.”

I nodded. I heard her loud and clear, but it didn’t make me feel any better. Instead of lingering on the subject, I changed it.

“What’s going on with you and Eugene?” I asked.

“What do you mean?”

“The two of you a couple now or what?”

“I wouldn’t say that. I’d say we’re… taking things slow.”

“What does that mean?” I asked.

“It means that there’s a special place in my heart for him, but there are a lot of things that we have to factor in before we do anything.”

“Right. How’s he handling the whole Chad situation? I know it’s been a minute since he died, but is it something he still brings up?”

“All the time, why?”

“No reason, I was just wondering.”

She eyed me closely, studying my every movement. “Is there something you need to tell me, Lourde?”

“No. Why you ask that?”

She raised her eyebrow in suspicion. “Don’t play me for a fool. I’m your mother! If there’s something you think I need to know, you need to tell me now.”

“And what happens after I tell you?”

“You give that burden to me to carry, and you move on,” she said.

I sighed as my eyes scanned the parking lot for anybody within earshot. There was already a weakness in my heart for Loyalty. I couldn’t afford to let my mother back in after so many years had gone by. I was too scared to get close to her again. I had Charlie Brown Syndrome. As soon as I got ready to kick the football, she’d snatch it away and I’d be stuck on my ass.
