CHAPTER 10

Mallory stared at her brother, George, while she held her dying lover. If she didn’t feel Blake’s blood rushing through her fingers, she’d believe she was dreaming. Only dreams could be so bizarre.

Unable to bear Blake’s weight any longer, she gently placed him on the floor. He lay on his stomach, allowing her to see the small hole in his back where the crimson liquid continued to flow. Her heart raced in panic, unsure of what she could do to save his life.

She sensed the two men standing over her. Mallory could almost feel their breath on the back of her neck. They’d come with a single mission in mind. To kill.

“Terrible aim, Cliff,” George commented. “This close, you should’ve been able to kill him with a single shot. Mallory, what the hell are you doing hanging out with vampires?”

For the time being, she ignored her brother. Her first-aid training hadn’t provided much assistance. Mallory removed the sweater she wore over her blouse and placed it on top of Blake’s wound, hoping to stop the bleeding. In their past discussions, they hadn’t discussed how quickly vampires healed.

George gently kicked her in the back, a not-so-subtle reminder he stood behind her. The bully within him refused to be ignored. Her brother was basically a good man but had some major failings. She never imagined he’d go to such an extreme.

“You’re hunting vampires?” she asked in disbelief. “How the hell did that happen?”

She stared at her hands, covered in Blake’s blood. Mallory remembered how he told her vampires were made.

“Leave that monster alone,” George ordered. “Wash your hands. Do you have any open cuts on your fingers or palms?”

Mallory hadn’t considered vampire blood seeping into her system through a cut rather than orally. Until Blake was out of the woods, she couldn’t leave his side. Her fate would be sealed if a cut existed.

Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Cliff pointing a weapon at them. There was no pity in his eyes for Blake or compassion for what she suffered. Mallory only saw hate reflected there.

“Stop!” she screamed, covering his body with hers. Her actions could result in his death or, by some miracle, preserved him. “He saved my life. Leave him alone. You’re the monsters, not Blake.”

“Mallory, by all that’s holy, I should exterminate you for kissing that undead creature,” George shouted back at her. “I couldn’t believe you were with him last night. We almost killed you until I recognized who was with the bloodsucker. What were you thinking?”

Everything became clear to her. George’s hunting hobby didn’t involve deer or boars, but vampires. He traveled across the country destroying the undead. She didn’t have a clue how George could’ve been recruited by the vicious group.

If Blake had been with someone else last night, they both would’ve died. The spray of bullets would’ve continued until the mission had been completed. George had stopped the attack as soon as he recognized her.

“I didn’t know what he was.” Mallory should sound convincing since she spoke the truth.
