Chapter 17

Kheone stepped out of the rift and stared at the building that had once been her home. She did not look back at Shax’s form retreating into the desert of Eden; the temptation to follow him was too much.

Only a few smudges of soot on the pale brick hinted at the conflagration that had raged here those many weeks ago. This was where it might all go down the toilet. She and Shax had prepared for many contingencies, but there was a good chance one they’d never imagined would pop up. In fact, she could guarantee there were plenty of contingencies they lacked the capacity to imagine. For the first time, she prayed things went wrong in the right way.

Kheone grabbed a handful of pebbles, standing where Shax had those many weeks ago. And just like Shax, she tossed the gravel at a window on the first floor, a few over from the room she used to call home. When nothing happened, she did it again.

A light flickered on behind the curtains as she picked up her third handful. The window opened, and Maj peered out into the night. Her dark brown skin and black hair made a perfect silhouette against the bright window, but her eyes twinkled even in the dimness of the night.

Kheone stepped from the shadows into the circle of light from the lamp in the courtyard, as Shax had once done.

“Kheone?” Maj said too loudly for Kheone’s comfort.

“Shh.” She placed a finger over her lips while gesturing for Maj to join her.

Maj clamped a hand over her own mouth, pointed toward the trees, and shut the window. Kheone stepped out of the light and walked over to the little stand of trees to wait.

Maj tore out of the building a moment later and joined her.

“Are you daft?” She pulled Kheone in for a hug. “I told your...whatever he is...I told him to get you out of town. I figured you were safer with him, no matter how you two joined up, than if Michael or she found you. What if someone else, anyone else, spotted you?”

“They didn’t.”

Maj slugged her in the arm.

“Ow.” Kheone rubbed at the spot and her arm was trapped between them as Maj hugged her once more.

“You’re not going to ask what that was for?”

“I assume it’s for leaving without saying goodbye.”

“Damn straight.” Maj let her go. “Though I suspect you weren’t given a choice.”

Kheone bit her lip. What tales had Michael spun for the gathering? And what did her old friend suspect? Only one way to find out.

“What did Michael tell you?”

Maj looked away, suddenly finding the bench much more interesting than Kheone. She twisted her hands together, finally answering in a soft voice.

“Michael said you betrayed us to the demons. That’s why they set fire to our building. He told us when he caught you out in a lie, you and Shax had threatened to kill us all with a blade of oblivion, one of Lucifer’s own daggers. I don’t believe it, but I’m the only one.
