The Stevens pistol grip is ergonomic and proved serviceable during testing.

MOSSBERG CRUISER 20-GAUGE

I thought it appropriate to test at least one Cruiser shotgun with its pistol grip. Now, I have deployed the 12-gauge shotgun as a personal-defense gun for many years and seldom thought of any other type, but for Cruiser testing, the 20-gauge Cruiser was chosen. A burly male will find that the 12-gauge pistol grip shotgun is unpleasant and difficult to control. The 20-gauge is easier, but, in the end and in my opinion, this pistol-grip design isn’t ideal for most personal-defense use.

I do not have an overblown ego and I do not enjoy firing hard-kicking 12-gauge shotguns, especially those that other members of the family cannot possibly use well. The 20-gauge is a better choice in a gun of this configuration—and far better than the minimally powered .410-bore. The 20-gauge may exhibit noticeable recoil in a lightweight shotgun, but this recoil is generally regarded as half that of the 12-gauge shotgun.
