Willow followed a southwesterly course across hilly country cut by a cat’s-cradle maze of drainages. The soil here came in many colors, yellow, bright red, and sometimes streaked in white, gray, and blue clay layers. Oaks crowded the bottoms while irregular patches of limber pine, juniper, and ponderosa timbered the higher slopes. Buffaloberry, serviceberry, and squaw currant matted the draws and covered cool streams. She knew where she was now, in the broken country just north of the Black Hills.

She traveled along the hillsides, sometimes leading the brown mare when the deer trails became too narrow. Off to the south, high-rising plumes of blue-brown smoke marked a fire racing across the grasslands. One set by lightning, or a human hand?

Let’s just hope we don’t meet them.
