MY YESTERDAY

Dallas sat in his driveway, unable to move. His mind was on Yasmin and how shallow his life was without her. After she went away, it took him two and a half years before he could allow himself to enjoy the company of another woman, and even then it was only to help ease the loneliness. He touched his chest, where there was a small tattooed picture of Yasmin, and thought back to when they first met.

It was Friday night and the Shark Bar in downtown Atlanta was packed. They were having open-mike night for aspiring poets, so all of the “conscious” types were roaming the place. Dallas stood at the bar drinking a bottle of water and checking out the smorgasbord of attractive ladies. Then a soulful-looking sister walked over, and all of a sudden he got tunnel vision. She became the only woman in the entire restaurant. She was the color of coal and had slanted brown eyes and the prettiest face he’d ever seen. He knew right away that they would be friends. He didn’t say anything, couldn’t find the words that would do her justice, so he watched her. Before her, the only women he had found attractive were the light-complexioned, long-hair types, but standing before him, black as a moonless night, her head wrapped in a peach-colored cloth and sporting a tiny diamond in her nose, was truly an act of God.

Dallas’s heart rotated in his chest when their eyes met. He couldn’t turn away. There was something about her that made him uneasy. Never before had a woman intimidated him with sheer beauty, but he found himself praying she found him attractive. She came a little closer, trying to get the bartender’s attention. Dallas could see that she didn’t stand a chance with the large crowd, so he decided that was all the opportunity he needed.

“What can I get for you?” he said, nodding toward the bar.

“I just want a bottle of water,” she said, easing her way closer to him. “Thanks for helping the vertically challenged.” She looked up at him with a smile.

“Not a problem,” he said, calling his friend over and ordering her water.

She handed him a five-dollar bill but he waved her off. “It’s on me.”

“Thank you.” She nodded politely.

“Are you reading tonight or just observing?”

“I’m just here,” she said, hunching her shoulders. “What about you?”

“Just observing, and I must say, enjoying the hell out of the view.” Dallas nodded in her direction, sex oozing from every syllable.

One tilt of her head made him wish he’d never tried that approach. It was as if she were saying, I see where your head is, and no thanks.

Her drink arrived and she handed him the money. When he refused it again, she stuck the five in his shirt pocket and walked away.

Dallas couldn’t let her leave thinking he was a dog, because that just wasn’t the case.

“Excuse me,” he said as he caught up to her. “My name is Dallas.”

“Nice to
