Handling our hungers

They’re not always what we think

When my daughter was born, she had to learn how to eat. She’d try sucking her fingers and the buttons on her dad’s shirt, but what she needed was milk – and only Mum could supply it.

Like Ruby, we sometimes suck on buttons when we need proper food. We look to the world to satisfy us, but only God can meet our deepest needs. Think back to the Israelites in the wilderness . . .

The manna discipleship programme

When God’s people, the Israelites, were wandering in the desert, they cried out to him for food. He supplied them with heavenly bread called ‘manna’, but in their hunger, they panicked. Some tried to store up too much, and some gathered too little. But whatever they did, he gave them just what they required.

Although we can’t always see it, God does the same with us today. I think I need a holiday from deadlines. God says, ‘No, but I will help you meet them.’ I think I need more sleep, or a house with more space. God says, ‘No, but I’ll look after your family.’ I think I need a haircut, better test results or a change of scene. God says, ‘No, you just need me.’

When Jesus tells us to pray for ‘daily bread’, he’s reminding us that we’re a wilderness people and as dependent upon him as the Israelites in the desert (Matthew 6:11). Like them, we are filled with hungers, and like them, we’re told to bring our needs to God. However, just as the ‘manna discipleship programme’ lasted for an entire generation, learning the lessons of ‘daily bread’ is the work of a lifetime. God’s sustenance is ongoing, not just a one-off meal.
