CHAPTER SEVEN

“WHAT’S THAT SOUND?” Cedric whispered. “Is it you?”

I shook my head. “I don’t think so.”

I was still vibrating happily inside, but I didn’t think I was so pleasured that I was singing without even realizing it.

I pointed to the book.

“It’s glowing,” I said.

He leaned into it. “That’s where the sound is coming from.” There was no doubt about it now. The sound was louder. It was playing We Wish You A Merry Christmas. A great song, but now wasn’t the time.

“We have to stop it,” I hissed. If it got much louder, they would definitely be able to hear it on the other side of the door. The last thing I wanted was to have them break in and burst my bubble of Cedric and me. Plus they seemed like scary witches who wouldn’t have any qualms about taking out anyone who got in their way.

How did I end up in this situation?

I grabbed the book and held it to my chest. It barely muffled the sound. I felt it vibrating against me. If anything it got louder.

“You need to stop,” I hissed at the book. It got quieter.

“Do you hear something?” I heard the man’s voice nearby.

“You have to stop now,” I said. The music stopped. My shoulders relaxed with relief, but my heart was still pounding.

We sat quietly for a while.

“It listened to you,” Cedric said.

“Yeah. I’m not sure why.”

“There must be some reason you were chosen to keep it safe,” he said.

I studied the pages again. I felt a connection to the book. But why?
