Chapter Ten
Loganâs words troubled Paige. Heâd survived the worst possible upbringing and had narrowly escaped the night his father had given chase. While she didnât doubt heâd taken his share of lives as a marshal, he wasnât the kind of man whoâd take pleasure in it. Nor was he the kind to do it unnecessarily.
He was the kind to help a stranger, even one whoâd shot him, without asking for anything in return. He was the kind whoâd take on the responsibility of a family when he was no more than a boy. He was the kind to help round up cattle despite being hurt. Everyone carried sins of some sort. Nobody was perfect. But she couldnât see what Loganâs could be to put such defeat in his words.
She didnât push him to explain, however, not when she felt the weight of her own troubles pressing on her chest, building pressure behind her eyes. Instead she watched him struggle to dress, aching for him when it was clear every movement caused him pain. Once she heard the front door close, she gathered her clothes and padded to her bedroom.
She breathed a little easier there. Despite the fact the papered walls reminded her of a baby sheâd never have; they didnât hold the same memories. Sheâd never made love to Alex in this room, in this bed. She hadnât curled into his side here, hadnât whispered and talked long into the night, long after they both should have been asleep.
She hadnât made love to another man here either. One that reminded her of everything sheâd been missing the past months. One that made her feel warm again after nearly a year of feeling cold. Pinching her eyes closed, Paige sank onto the bed, her clothes still bundled in her arms. She couldnât help feeling sheâd betrayed Alex somehow. Even though she knew him well enough to know heâd want her happiness, it didnât change the fact sheâd shared her bed with another man. And, despite the guilt she was feeling, she didnât regret it.
Paige continued to feel torn as she washed and dressed, prepared supper. Logan remained outside on the porch until she called him in to eat. He looked up from one of the rockers that sat to the right of the door. His hair was tousled, as though heâd dragged his fingers through it a half dozen times. His gray eyes were haunted. For the first time since theyâd made love earlier, Paige considered he might be worrying about more than his father and his past.
She wiped her hands onto her apron as she tried to untie her tongue. While she and Alex had often teased each other after making love, Logan wasnât her husband and making light of what theyâd done didnât feel right.
âIâm not sorry, Logan, so I hope that eases the worry I can see on your face.â
When he didnât answer, she decided maybe the best thing would be not to say anything else. They ate in silence.
