As I come to, I feel a sense of clarity I hadn't in days. I know right away where I am and what happened. Turning my head to the side, I see Webster lying beside me, asleep in my bed. His form is cuddled close to mine, and he has a throw blanket from my living room stretched over him.
My mouth feels that sickly dryness that comes after being sick. Whatever I had knocked me on my ass for a solid twenty-four hours. Now that I'm feeling better, I need to get myself cleaned up and back in the swing of things.
My boy deserves a special treat for taking such good care of me.
I ease out of the bed slowly to get in the shower. I scrub the sickness from my body, taking extra care to make sure everything is as fresh as can be.
Sitting in my own sweat isn't an attractive quality. One that my boy doesnât need to experience. And though I don't know why Webster came by, I'm glad he did.
I would have been fine without having someone to help me through everything, but it was better knowing he cared enough to show up and stick around.
When I exit the shower, I wrap a towel around my waist before quietly moving into the bedroom. I slip on a pair of boxers first. As I'm pulling up my jeans, Webster starts to cough.
Shit. I'd know that sound anywhere.
My boy is sick. Whatever I had must be contagious.
I finish getting dressed quickly, then I go out to gather all the things he brought for me. I run the thermometer across his forehead. He wiggles in the bed, but he doesn't fight me since he's still half asleep.
When I pull the device back, I see his temperatures already climbing. 102. Not too bad, but still not good. Knowing I need to figure out what he wants to do, I gently shake him awake.
âBaby, I need you to wake up. Talk to me.â My boy winces as his eyes open to look at me. âThere you are. How are you feeling?â
He shakes his head as his mouth turns into a frown. âBad.â
âYeah, I thought so. I can take care of you. I just need to know a few things. I have today off. Do I need to call into your work?â
âNo,â he says, though it seems like a struggle.
I press a finger to his lips. âNo more talking for you. Just yes or no with your head. If it's something more, we'll write it out, okay? I know how bad your throat must hurt.â
Tears well in his eyes. I can't resist running my hands across his forehead and through his hair. He leans into the touch, his eyes closing as if he feels at peace. My heart beats rapidly as emotions surge through me.
I don't know if it's his sickness, or if his feelings for me had already changed before he showed up, but I'm going to bask in it while I can.
