Episode 14

Super Pack

Liam

Liam was annoyed. He wanted to be at home fucking Scarlet until she bit him. She wouldn’t do it every time. She probably would if he asked for it, but he wanted her to do it spontaneously like she had in the office. It drove him right up to the point of losing all control and he fucking loved that.

But instead, he was with his brother and Albert DeSandre from Oregon. Albert was like three-hundred and some years old and in the last four or five decades had started making the trek out to see their pack every five years or so. He was nice enough, but Liam suspected that Albert thought of anyone under fifty as a puppy.

“This is nice,” said Albert, looking around Maxim’s. “It was some weird shade of puce during the twenties. I’m glad they’ve improved matters.”

“I’m not even sure what color puce is,” said Paxton, “but it sounds terrible.”

“It’s kind of a brownish purple color,” said Albert, with a shrug. “Is that a human over there?”

“They let humans in if they’re with someone,” said Liam, glancing over. “That one is with a vampire.”

“Oh. I don’t know that I ever understood humans, but I feel even more lost of late.”

“They’re a bit weird,” agreed Paxton, picking at his jumbo shrimp. “Hey, speaking of humans,” he said looking up at Liam. “I saw yours on the news.”

“What?” Liam froze with his drink half-way to his mouth.

“Your secretary human girl. The pretty one. I saw her on the news. She was at a protest.”

“Oh,” said Liam, finishing his drink. “Yeah, she was protesting the loosening of endangered species restrictions. She’s concerned for the Red Wolves.”

“Really?” asked Albert. “That’s very nice of her. They are so few families left.”

“She says there’s only about twenty breeding pairs and that they could be decimated in a matter of months if the current administration allows hunting.”

“Yes,” agreed Albert nodding. “That nice little zoo up in Washington has been doing such hard work to get even as many as twenty. My pack donates every year to their efforts. Your human really cares?”

“Yes, she really does,” said Liam. “A surprising amount. I had to listen to an entire soliloquy on why we needed to do outreach to farmers to get them to understand the plight of the wolf and why they should never kill a wolf.”

Paxton gave a chortling laugh. “Yes, that would be nice. Too bad it will never happen.”

“She’s from some rural middle-of-nowhere place called Abingdon. Apparently, she used to doorbell her neighbors and hand-out pamphlets on environmental issues when she was in high-school.”

Albert let out a dry chuckle. “I’m sure that made her quite popular.”

“I get the feeling that Scarlet has always marched to the beat of her own drum,” said Liam, drily.

“Well, that gives me hope,” said Albert, looking thoughtful. “They all seem to rush about so much and be stuck to their devices. I feel like we’ve let the humans slide away from us. It’s so hard to bridge the gap anymore.
