I nursed a bottle of water to soothe my thirst and surveyed my surroundings, eyeing the crowd of uniform clad men for Emmett and Jesse. This year’s Veterans festival was especially special. Three days ago, two Marines returned home to Jennings in one piece, and today, we would be honoring their service, as well as the service of the other men who had served alongside them.

I sat up straighter in the grass when I noticed Emmett approaching on his Bonneville. He gave me his infamous squint and winked at me from across the field, his sea blue eyes glimmering against mine. Unlike the rest of the men who surrounded him, he wasn’t in uniform. He had told me that he hadn’t put it on since the day he was discharged. That it held too many memories in its fabric that he’d rather forget.
