Chapter 11

THE POLES

Beams of escape wrestling over the earth

Cube after cube, level after level, we slowly descended. The reptilian host led the way, dragging its foul feet, and cursing as it went. Together, we passed multitudes of people individually imprisoned in cells of doom. It was a macramé of horror moving downward. Wailing, moaning, slurping, and sobbing sounds increased into a steady roar.

The grisly guide moved back out onto the wide road, over to its ledge. Proceeding along the way, very small, odd, foul-smelling creatures of every shape and design squirmed in the putrid brown loam, creating squishing sensations between my toes. Looking upward, I could see vortexes descending, dropping new arrivals into waiting cubes. I wanted to wake up but could not; I was terrified.

Where were we going? What would I do if I were left here? These thoughts and troubling questions echoed through my mind. How I wanted to leave this land! Off in the distance, near the cubes, that beautiful purplish being was seen sneaking about. The saurian guide did not pay any attention to this and continued on.

We neared the central part where the road edge pitched into the circular doughnut-hole void. Multitudes of fiendish personages were congregating there. Arriving at the spiral road’s cliff-like edge, the guide stopped, faced me, and pointed towards many devilish individuals climbing up what appeared to be narrow wavy vaporous beams.

In a flash, these translucent misty contrails began changing into solid wooden poles before my eyes! There were now, abruptly, rows and rows of oily brown poles rapidly appearing. Hundreds materialized along the edge of the precipice. Each emerged at evenly spaced intervals, while hordes of fiendish entities gathered at the base of these strange reddish-brown poles.

All these poles went straight up into the circular void of this pit, vanishing into the dizzy heights above. We walked to the closest one and stood next to it. I touched it without thinking, and a wave of depressing doom assailed me like static shock. I withdrew my hand and looked around.

An ocean of strange beings surrounded me. They were all mocking, cursing, singing, and blaspheming. Their cries and shrieks contained thoughts of gloom, lust, hopelessness, and malaise to anyone near enough to hear.

Many seemed harmless, some even appeared cute, but when any turned to face me, it was clear that they were diabolically devious by the dim yellow glint in their eyes. It was extremely disconcerting standing in the midst of thousands of pushing and shoving creatures.

The devilish guide pointed upwards asking, “Can you see the perches above?”

I could not see anything except a weird snake-like creature with white crawling fur and a head shaped like a small horse. This creature wiggled by my foot and slithered up the pole. Its little horse’s head was snarling, hissing and baring its square shaped teeth as it passed. I saw a name forming in its moving fur spelling, Appetites of a Kind.

As this horse-headed entity climbed out of sight, the walls and ceiling became like a movie screen so anyone could monitor its progress.
