IT WAS DAYLIGHT OUT when Tempest finally woke. She stretched out and yawned in sleepiness. I couldn’t blame her—the forest floor wasn’t great to sleep on.

It had been quiet the rest of the night, which meant Lillith still didn’t feel she had the necessary tools to defeat me. I wouldn’t put it past her finding another healer so quickly, but spinning up that healer would be a lot for one night.

“Did you sleep?” Tempest’s voice was soft.

“No, love, but that’s okay.” I laid my head back against the bramble behind me. “Are you ready to start training?”

She had shifted back to her natural state sometime during the night. That would be the first thing we would correct. She needed to have control over shifting and unshifting.

“What’s first?” Her eyes looked uncertain, but her energy was buzzing with excitement.

It would probably feel good to get back to fighting, at least for a little bit. I was hoping that enthusiasm wouldn’t wear off as time went on. They were going to be necessary skills for her to have. She’d always be a target once the world found out about her existence. She’d need to make a name for herself, just as Hamilton had. It shouldn’t be hard, given they’re related. Huh, maybe that’s why he’s done what he’s done. I had to give the man more credit than I initially had.

“We’re going to practice shifting—which I know you have down—and unshifting. There will be a time and a place to be shifted. You need to be able to do both in the blink of an eye.”

She stuck her lip out in a pout. “It’s so much work to keep the power under control. Shifting back to my natural state is damn near impossible until the power runs out.”

“It’s also going to be exhausting if you don’t learn how to do it.” I walked over and grabbed her hand in mine to pull her out of the thicket.

She jerked away and then looked at me like I had lost my mind. “What’re you doing? You can’t touch me.” Her words pierced me, but that had more to do with the bond than my reaction to them.

“Sorry, love. Just habit, I guess.”

“Can we work on that in here?” She looked around nervously.

“Of course.” I sat back down, and so did she.

She closed her eyes briefly, and when they opened, they were bright orange. Shifting wouldn’t be the problem, that much was certain.

“Any pointers?”

I gave her a shrug in response. “This is new to everyone. Just try imagining putting a top on a bottle. The bottle being the power that you have.”

She closed her eyes again, but this time, they were shut longer. When she opened them, they were a mixture of orange and brown. I tried getting a read on her energy, but it was so chaotic it was hard to pinpoint.

“How do you feel?” While this hadn’t been a success, it would still be important to take note of the feeling.

“Like I’m about to explode.
