With the door shut and locked behind me, I turn to face Pierce and Rykker. They glance at me, Pierce at least having the decency to flinch as he notes the anger in my eyes.

It takes me a few seconds to calm myself. I have to remember that we’re here on a mission. That the woman is a distraction that could endanger everything we’ve worked so hard for.

“Damn you, Pierce, what the hell happened,” I growl.

Pierce sighs, running a hand over his face then shoving it into his hair. His eyes slip from me, but I don’t let him off the hook.

We’re supposed to be cold toward the woman. Aloof and unreadable.

We are not supposed to be taking baths with her ... and we are definitely not supposed to be mating with her just for the hell of it.

She’s going to be the ruin of us all if she remains here much longer. Of that, I’m certain. Taking another breath, I shake my head at Pierce.

Finally, he answers quietly, “I don’t know.”

“You don’t know?” I demand, my anger doubling. “We don’t have the luxury of not knowing what the hell we’re doing, or have you forgotten why we’re here? Try explaining to me what the hell I walked in on. Start at the beginning.”

Pierce frowns, but he obeys by saying, “Everything was fine ... I was fine. I escorted her back here and thought a bath might help her. I don’t know. But I was fine. Then, the next second my wolf overtook me. I cared for the wound. The one that Rykker left on her thigh was still bleeding.”

“Pierce,” I warn.

“She’s my future, I can sense it. My wolf could tell before I could that she was the missing piece of my soul,” he says, his voice low and thick with emotion. Turning to Rykker, he tells him, “I’m sorry. Truly. I know how you feel toward her, and I didn’t set out for this to happen. Hell, you know I’d rather not be feeling this way.”

Rykker holds up a hand, cutting off the rest of Pierce’s rambling apology, and he falls quiet as he waits for Rykker's reaction.

I watch them, tense and ready to intervene, as I wait for any signs of another brawl to break out between them. They should know better than to fight one another in the Grey Prince’s court.

Especially over a woman, and a human at that.

We’re better than that.

Not us.

“No, you have no reason to apologize,” Rykker says with a shake of his head. “If anyone, I should be the one to apologize. Of course, I should have known you would experience a draw to her, just as I did.”

“Then that’s even more reason to apologize,” Pierce says.

“No,” Rykker insists, his eyes dropping to the floor. “No. I shouldn’t have attacked you. I let the bond affect my decisions. I let a woman come between us.”

“Bond?” I ask, not liking the direction this conversation was going.

“It’s a fate bond,” Rykker clarified, flinching when he glances at me to see the anger burning in my eyes at this.
