Planters
Other than plastic and ceramic pots, all manner of containers can be used to house plants, bulbs and flowers.
• Tin cans and larger drums make interesting containers for bulbs.
• 1 tonne heavy-duty builders’ bags are great for growing potatoes or other vegetables when space is at a premium.
• For a large-scale planter, reuse an old boat!
Nurture
After diligently sowing your seeds in a greenhouse, seedbed or cold frame, a little TLC is needed to encourage them as they continue to grow outside. Finding ways to raise the temperature just a few degrees can make all the difference to theplant’s health.
• Cut plastic bottles in two and use each half as a mini greenhouse for individual plants. This is particularly effective in colder areas.
• Bubble wrap or fleecing can help protect plants in cold conditions. Polystyrene pots and trays are also helpful for insulation.
• Blanch celery by tying cardboard around the stalks – celery straitjackets!
