I WANTED TO BUILD A MIND-CONTROLLED WHEELCHAIR

‘AHHH! IT WORKS!’ I yell out in excitement, but no words can actually describe how I’m feeling in this moment. It’s February 2008 and I’ve just connected mind control over my smart wheelchair, TIM, with a custom brain–computer interface (BCI). These thoughts are all mental tasks synonymous with IQ tests, like arithmetic, writing and figure rotation. The parietal lobe of the brain works hard on these types of tasks, so I have some of my BCI electrodes connected to this area on the scalp, as well as to the occipital lobe at the back of the head, which is responsible for visual processing of all the data our eyes send to it.
