Chapter 25

Mona-Lisa

“What do you want?” I asked nastily.

“I know you are mad and all but at least hear me out,” Delano pleaded into the phone. I laid down on the bed to listen to what I assumed would be a lie.

“I had some stuff to take care of for my mother like I said and-”

“Oh so now she’s your mother? I find it odd how quick you fell in love with her. I mean she did abandon you and all right?”

“Mona, you are the main one preaching forgiveness all the time so how could you come at me like that? I have to let that shit go because it held me down too long.”

“If that’s the case then why are you still not talking to your father? I called him and he is all distraught. My mama showed up here last night so I called him to see what happened and he spilled out his heart. You are mad about some money like that’s all that matters. Then you got me wrapped up in your shit with this club that I have no idea to run-”

“Damn ma, you have no faith in me at all. I didn’t throw you to the wolves. That club could damn near run itself because everybody that works for me been in the business for a long time. Right now is not a good time for me to be focused on anything other than getting out of this mess I’m in. I thought you understood that.”

“I don’t know what I understand anymore Del.”

“Mona, I don’t need you folding on me, not right now. I need you to trust me and know that every move I make is carefully calculated. I know this doesn’t make sense and I wish I could tell you more, but the less you know the better. Just get dressed and take this ride with me. I need to show you something that may be able to change your perception.”

I liked the sound of that but didn’t want to get my hopes up too much. “I’m dressed but are we gonna be gone long? I wanna see Marissa off.”

“Where is she going?”

“She is going to stay with her daddy for the summer.”

“You mean the cat she just met?”

The way he asked made it sound like a bad idea now. I was all for it when my opinion was asked this morning but now I felt unsure. Del had a way of changing my perception on everything and he did it effortlessly.

“How far away are you?” I heard a horn blare outside of my window. I rolled my eyes when I saw a black Navigator idling in front of my house. The window rolled down and I could make out Delano’s face.

“Here I come.” I looked down at my faded skinny jeans and red crop top. I started to change not knowing where we were going, but though better of it before slipping on my Steve Madden leopard print wedges that made me feel tall.
