The fear of communism and nuclear war changed Republican foreign policy. The party now believed that the United States had to stop the Soviets from spreading communism around the world. If they had to use force to do that, they should. This idea was shared by the Democrats, too. During this time, the Cold War turned into real war twice, once in Korea and once in Vietnam. U.S. soldiers fought to stop the communist takeovers in those countries. In Korea it worked, since South Korea remained a democracy. In Vietnam it did not. The communists took over the entire country when the American forces pulled out.

Joseph McCarthy was a Republican senator from Wisconsin. He had a deep fear and hatred for communism. In fact, he believed that there were commu-nists all over the United States who were working as spies to take over the government. He be-lieved it was his job to hunt these people down and arrest them. During the 1950s, he falsely accused a lot of people, including writers, scientists, politicians, and Hollywood movie stars. His actions have often been described as a witch hunt. Before he was stopped, hundreds of people lost their jobs. He caused a lot of serious problems for the country and became an embarrassment to the Republican Party.
