They made love again, twice, then Darren suggested a shower and some breakfast. He fished through his closet and found Duncan a pair of jeans and a T-shirt. Luckily they were both about the same height, Darren just a shade taller. Shoes were a problem, his being far too big, so he gave Duncan a pair of flip-flops to wear round the apartment.
âWeâll have to go shopping for shoes,â he remarked as he scrambled up some eggs and made toast. âDuncan?â He glanced over his shoulder to where the Scot was staring around him in apparent fascination.
âEverything here is so different,â he said. âWhatâs that?â He pointed at Darrenâs flat-screen TV.
âThatâs a television,â Darren said with what he hoped was a lack of impatience. âYou can watch the news if you like while I get this ready.â
He picked up the remote and turned on the TV. Duncan looked startled as a womanâs face swam into view, her expression grave as she recounted details of a traffic accident on the 405 freeway. Duncan sank onto the couch, transfixed by the scenes of the pileup involving about six cars.
âGod Almighty,â he whispered. âHow is it possible? Where is she, and where are aâ these poor folk?â
âSheâs in a studio,â Darren said.
âA studio?â
âUh huh, itâs all relayed through cameras and airwaves, andâIâll explain it later. Come and eat. Iâve poured you some coffeeâ¦â
âYou just take aâ this for granted?â
âItâs been around since long before I was born, so yeah, I guess I just take it all for granted.â
âAmazing.â Duncan sat at the table but kept glancing over at the TV in between wolfing down the eggs and toast. âThis is very guid,â he said through a mouthful. âYeâre a grand cook.â
Darren grinned. âI can do eggs and a mean spaghetti.â He suppressed the sigh that almost sprang to his lips when Duncan looked puzzled. âSpaghettiâ¦pasta. Havenât heard of pizza either, I bet.â
Duncan shook his head, no.
âWell, maybe tonight. First, we need to get you some shoes.â
âDâye think yon place might still have my clothes? The brooch was my mamâs, Iâd like to get it back.â
âOh, your kilt and things? They were being cleaned at the other hospital. Melissa, the nurse looking after you should have them, or know where they are. We can swing by there when we go out.â
âGrand.â
âMore coffee?â
âAye, itâs very guid.â
