Chapter Thirty-One

A disturbance in my chambers pulled me from sleep. It was late afternoon, judging by the sun’s position in the sky. I sat up and rubbed my eyes, peering around my room.

My room appeared undisturbed, and yet, I could feel that someone had been in here with me while I slept.

Movement in my periphery caught my attention, and I turned, peering into the shadows lining the wall of my chambers. Gooseflesh erupted over my arms and the hair on the nape of my neck stood to attention. I couldn’t distinguish anything or anyone lurking there. I moved to get out of bed, but paused when Kieran emerged from the shadows. As he strolled over to my bed, I sat frozen, watching him. The mattress dipped under his weight as he lowered himself on to it.

“You are a sight to behold when you sleep, Harlowe,” he smirked at me. Unease rushed through me at the thought of this monster lurking in the shadows, watching me sleep; unaware and vulnerable.

“No snarky comments or sneers of disdain,” he crooned. “Just a beautiful, radiant… silent woman.” His smile grew vicious. “What else could a man ask for in a bride?”

“How did you get in here?” I demanded. “Did the guards let you in?”

That vicious grin grew even wider. “My dear Harlowe, if I want to get to you, nothing in this world will keep me from reaching you.”

I didn’t know what he meant, but his words sent fear spiking through me as the truth of them settled over me.

Kieran crawled towards me on the bed, moving like a predator stalking his prey, and my own stupid fear kept me paralysed and rooted in place. He knelt before me, locking my eyes in the turbulent blue depths of his own as they sparked with danger. Kieran placed his hand on my chest and pushed me onto the bed. My breathing hitched, and I remained still as he looked down at me, studying me.

I trained with the best warriors in Aetherian. I knew how to fight back and disarm men twice my size. But something in the way Kieran looked at me in that moment had me too afraid to make a move against him. I could sense the power within him, and his desire to hurt me if given cause.

Kieran straddled my hips before lowering his body on to mine; caging me in under his larger frame. Still, I said nothing. I winced as he nuzzled his nose against the damaged skin on my neck. Kieran kissed the bruising he had inflicted the previous night, and I felt the smile tugging at his lips as he did so. “You sent your little pet dog to warn me away from you, didn’t you, Harlowe?” he said sardonically.

It took me a moment to realise he was talking about Silas.

I swallowed before answering, “No.”

Kieran chuckled darkly. “He thinks he has some sort of claim on you,” he said in bemusement before running his nose up to the shell of my ear and inhaling deeply.
