Chapter 19

Tobias was jubilant to find out that he still owned his house and that it had been well maintained. He regretted being so hard on the faithful Greg. He’d diligently cared for the grounds and the house, and handled Tobias’s businesses and finances with care. All that and the man had kept his original downstairs quarters, not even moving upstairs to one of the spacious guest rooms.

Then Tobias returned home after a ten-year absence with not one, but two strangers in tow. It would be enough to upset even the most mild-mannered human.

After Tobias bonded the three of them together, he’d need to take some time to find Greg a meaningful gift. Something that would reflect his deep appreciation of the man’s exemplary loyalty and hard work.

“This place is amazing,” Briar gushed as Tobias led them up the staircase to the second floor.

“It’s nice,” Memphis grumbled. Tobias felt bad for Memphis as it was obvious that he was devastated by the loss of his precious motorcycle. He’d meant it when he told Memphis he’d buy him another. It would be a good way to show Memphis that not only could Tobias take care of his flock, but that he was willing to indulge them.

He’d heard of vampires who were very strict with their flocks and limited their freedom out of fear for their safety. He couldn’t think of a better symbol that would grant his flock autonomy than a motorcycle, as it was a rather dangerous mode of transportation. The road to his house, Del Dios, was a popular one for motorcycle enthusiasts and he’d seen his fair share of accidents over the years.

As Tobias remembered those wrecks, worry hit him.

Perhaps safety gear. He’d order Memphis every piece of safety gear he could find and have it delivered with the motorcycle.

“I feel a little like Alice in Wonderland,” Briar admitted, drawing Tobias out of his thoughts.

“Welcome to the world of vampires,” Memphis said. “There aren’t many of them, but the ones who survive being turned usually end up being rich fuckers.”

“What do you mean most don’t survive being turned?’ Briar asked.

“Being turned is an iffy process, only about 15% survive,” Memphis explained.

“Less than that,” Tobias said as he walked them into his bedroom. “I think the statistic is about 10% survive being turned. And out of that, only half survive past their second year. Young vampires suffer from constant hunger, and it often drives them to attack humans or other preternatural creatures. In the old days, you could slaughter a small, remote village and cover it up with ease. But now it’s far more dangerous.”

“Yeah, the last thing you guys want is someone catching a young vamp with a cell phone camera and posting that shit on social media,” Memphis said as he crossed the room to sit on the bed. Stretching his arms out behind him, Memphis rested his weight on his hands and crossed his legs at the ankles. Tobias couldn’t help admiring how good the chimera looked sitting on his bed.
