Josh and the Three Schools

Is Yehoshua a devotee of Cynicism, Epicureanism, or Stoicism? It appears that when it comes to philosophy, Yehoshua raises no flag, commits to no team. He is cynical, but not a Cynic. He is epicurean, but not an Epicurean. He is stoic, but not a Stoic. He is all three—a Harmonian, as I like to call him.

Philosophies are simply different approaches to life, and Yehoshua offers a nod of approval to bits and pieces of other frameworks while offering a fully coherent way of living the good life.

Why would a Hebrew Galilean messiah want to lower himself to the position of a toga-wearing Greek philosopher? The answer is that he wouldn’t. Yehoshua is certainly philosophical, but he doesn’t set out to invent a philosophy. He starts no academy, writes nothing down, makes fun of Greek garb, and appoints no individual successor to run a namesake school.

Still, one can assemble a rather wonderful way of life from his philosophical teachings. Shall we assemble his academy and build him a school? If he blends Epic, Cynic, and Stoic thought into a unified system of philosophy called the House of Harmonianism, can we give him a philosophical motto? “Enjoy what you will, scorn what you can, bear what you must.” This seems to more or less sum up his philosophical outlook. Having constructed him a somewhat disjointed motto and academy, let us now populate it with his morals and values.
