MEREDITH

I step into our room, but my new frenemy doesn’t join me.

“I’ll be right back,” he says.

Sitting on the edge of the bed, I wince as the radiating sting travels from my left ass cheek to my thigh. It’s warm and welcoming in here, so that’s one thing going for this suckfest of a day.

After a few minutes, the door creaks open with Dylan’s return.

“I didn’t mind sleeping outside, you know,” I mumble.

I can practically hear his annoyance over the door closing behind him. “While I’m certain you would’ve been comfortable sleeping with my golf clubs as a body pillow in the back of my freezing SUV, I think this warm bed will do.”

“You play golf?” I crack a smile.

“Good one.” He tosses a shirt onto the bed and sighs. “Now, go ahead and get what you really want to say off your chest. More comments about what a snobby prick I am? Or are you going to make some jab about my game, on and off the course?”

“I’m not… I wasn’t going to say anything else.”

He quirks a brow, and before I’m able to think of a response, he heads for the bathroom. As he reaches the door, he turns back around. “I had a clean shirt in my car, if you want to change into it.”

“Thanks,” I whisper as he disappears.

And I’m left alone again in this room with reindeer figurines staring back at me.

Sighing, I reach for his shirt, admitting to myself that it’s a considerate gesture, which is something I used to believe he was incapable of. I’ve built him up over the years to be the jerk he was when we met.

But today, I’ve seen a different side of him. Has it always existed?

“Yeah, right,” I mumble and hold his shirt up.

He might not be sleeping with Roz, but it doesn’t mean he’s not a dick. Just because his smile—even the smallest hint of one—is charming and does funny things to me doesn’t mean he’s not an entitled asshole.

I clutch his T-shirt to my chest as I walk to the window. It’s snowing, but it reminds me of rain and the first day of our internship. There was a drizzle. It was cloudy with promises that it would be a dreary day.

Of course, the first person I saw was Dylan.

I fought with my umbrella, and he offered to help. I refused on principle and determination to remain loyal to my plans of hating him for as long as I live.

I hadn’t known he’d been accepted for the internship, and it only peeved me further when I discovered Mr. Cortez’s son is Trey—Dylan’s best friend.

I had to work hard to get in, just as I had to in order to get accepted into college. I’ve worked hard all my life and never had anything handed to me.

Maybe Dylan worked hard too, but the fact remains—he and I have different lives.

He spends his Sundays at country clubs and his summers at lake houses while I ensure my dad’s laundry is done and his refrigerator is stocked.
