I’d never experienced anything like it in my life. He managed to work himself up into such a state, I don’t think he even knew himself what he was saying. I can’t, I don’t know how to describe the way he succeeded in bringing hundreds of people to their feet as if they’d been stung by a wasp, shouting and chanting and rejoicing, but he did succeed. Little Fräulein Deckmann and I were paralysed, clutching on to each other’s hands, when the SS man tapped us on the shoulder and said, well, girls, applaud, at least you can applaud: so we did. A bit. Otherwise they’d have lynched us. But we were appalled. We could hardly breathe, we were so frightened. That one man had the power to get that huge crowd to yell, yes, we want total war, over and over again, you wanted to shake your head and say, what, are they all drunk? But they had no choice. They had lost their individuality. They were bewitched by this tiny man. It was like, I don’t know, Jesus or something.

Projection: colour film of the speech, Goebbels’s brown uniform against the red banners, the hysteria of the crowd.
