Sia

* * *

The next morning, Meria and I went to breakfast in the clearing. She carried both the shoes.

“No way in hell I’m wearing them in the woods,” she said. “It’d be ridiculous.”

We walked side by side down the path through the trees. Birds chirped and a fresh breeze carried the salty scent of the sea. I inhaled deeply, picking up more scents—the earthy smell of trees and grass. I drew it deeply into my lungs, loving the way it made me feel alive.

This was a hell of a lot better than living in Seattle, I realized. Maybe once I was back in the human world, I could move out to one of the islands in Puget Sound. They had to be a little bit like this, albeit not quite as spectacular. Nothing could compare to the beauty of a fae realm, I was sure.

Still, I would probably like it.

As we neared the clearing where they’d set up the tables on the first day, my heart began to pound. The king would be here.

Was I ready to see him?

What had really happened between us back in his bedroom? I’d touched his skin—I was sure of it. And yet, he said no one could.

I shivered.

I didn’t want to be special to him.

Lie.

I shook the thought away, annoyed with myself. When we reached the clearing, my gaze went immediately to the spot where Lore had been sitting before.

His chair was empty.

Disappointment filled me, followed almost immediately by relief. This was a good thing. Definitely a good thing.

I shared a look with Meria, who seemed to be able to read my mind. She raised an eyebrow but said nothing.

Together, we took a seat at one of the tables. As before, the only space left available was with Evelyn’s group. She glared at us, and I glared back. We had won twice, and she hated it.

Good.

“Welcome.” Vusario’s voice boomed out over the crowd.

I filled my plate with the day’s fabulous breakfast offerings as he went through a recap of the day before. Meria and I shared a glance as he mentioned our victory, and I was grateful to hear that today would be a rest day. My body still ached, and I didn’t think I had it in me to fight another monster.

As the breakfast ended and we departed the clearing, a guard approached us. He wore the dark gray uniform of Vusario’s personal guard, and his face was set in serious lines.

“Sia? You need to come with me.”

I stutter-stepped, staring at him. “What?”

“Vusario would like to see you.”

I looked over at Meria, worry twisting in my gut. She frowned, then gave a weak shrug. “I guess you have to go.”

The guard frowned. “Of course she does. The High Seer requests her presence.”

Meria rolled her eyes, and the guard growled.

“Chill, Cujo,” she said.

He stepped forward, but I darted between them before anything could happen. “I’m coming.” I shot a look at Meria. “I’ll see you back at our place.”

She nodded. “Watch your back around this one.
