Chapter 21
Jamal sat in his truck outside of the hospital. He tried to prepare himself for what he might see. He took a sip of his Grey Goose and stuck it back in the glove compartment. He hoped it would calm his nerves.
“I’m looking for Nurse Kim,” he said once he reached the nurse’s station.
“I will page her for you,” the elderly woman sitting behind the desk said. A small white woman came up behind him.
“Jamal?” she asked.
“Yes ma’am,” he confirmed.
“Hi, I’m Kim,” she introduced, extending her hand, which Jamal shook.
“How is she doing?” he questioned.
“Let me take you to her,” Kim said, leading him down the hall.
Jamal entered the room behind Kim. There, Sierra was lying in the bed, looking nothing like the woman he known.
“What happened to her?” he inquired as he walked over to her bedside.
“We are unsure. She was found in a park unconscious,” the nurse explained.
“Somebody attacked her?” Jamal asked, looking at her swollen lip and bruised face. She was so thin and rough looking.
“It’s possible. We won’t know anything until she can wake up and can tell us,” Kim continued.
“Is she in a coma or something?” Jamal asked.
“We had to sedate her once she woke up. She was very combative and trying to leave. It should be wearing off soon,” Kim said, checking her IV that was hanging.
“I don’t understand how she got like this,” he said to himself.
“How long has she been using?” Kim asked.
“I don’t know. She left home a few months ago and we haven’t known where she was until now. I’m glad she was found, but not like this,” Jamal said as a tear rolled down his cheek.
“I need to call her sister,” he told her, pulling out his phone.
“Okay. I will be back in a minute,” Kim said leaving the room.
Jamal pulled a chair up to her bed and sat down. He grabbed her hand and noticed that her wedding ring was gone.
“Damn, baby. Why you do this to yourself? Why you do this?” he asked her. It was hurting his soul to see her in this condition.
“Stacey,” he spoke into the phone.
“You there?” she asked.
“Yeah, I’m here with her,” Jamal confirmed.
“Is she okay?” Stacey inquired.
“She… she is sedated right now. I’m waiting on her to wake up. They had to calm her. She was fighting and shit. She was beat up. Stacey, she looks so bad,” Jamal described unable to hold it in anymore. He had never been one to cry in front of a woman, but he was hurting.
“Jamal, what do you mean?” Stacey asked. She wished she could be there.
“She doesn’t even look like herself. She’s so thin and beat up,” Jamal repeated.
“Okay. Just stay there with her. I will call you back in a minute,” Stacey vowed. She couldn’t take hearing him break down like he was.
“Okay,” he said hanging up.
Stacey put her head in her hands and cried. She couldn’t even imagine the shape her sister was in, but she knew it had to be bad.
