Chapter Nine

The Savage Star Restaurant, Witch Hollow

SATAN

One thing that the Great Satan knew for sure, apart from how scary chickens were or that one day the ants would defeat us all, was I only made one batch of the Elixir of Eternal Youth, and what remained of that was in a flask in my lovely attic.

So, as I perched on my rightful place on my witch’s shoulder in the entrance to the Savage Star restaurant, and she was stunned to silence by the kid’s giggles, the crash of plates, and smash of glasses, I allowed myself a rare smile of the innocent.

It wasn’t as satisfying as the smug smile of the guilty, but you took what you could get.

Sin’s burning gaze met mine, as he stepped closer to my witch, wrapping a protective arm around her waist. “Your handiwork again, I presume?”

“This is why you’re Dr Watson, and I’m Holmes.” I rolled my eyes. “The Great Satan is not to blame.”

Why was it harder to cough out that sentence than a hairball?

Sin blinked. “That actually sounded sincere.”

“Don’t get used to it.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it.”

My witch scratched under my chin; that was the business. It was almost worth being sincere more often.

Only joking.

My witch tilted her head. “So, are we looking at two deaging potions, something else, or a kid’s party gone wrong?”

I gazed in awed envy at the devastation inside the restaurant, while my demon urged me to jump off my witch’s shoulder and teleport to join in the mischief.

How was a demon meant to resist? There should be a Chaos Clause that freed familiars to enjoy bonus moments like this.

Fair play, Loki’s familiar would be a lucky bastard.

The Savage Star was a magical, elven run restaurant. The walls undulated like a shimmering ice cave, and the floor gleamed with sapphires. The stars, which blazed in the black ceiling, pulsed wildly.

This was where the shifter took my witch to romance her, but right now, it looked more like a nursery. At least a dozen wee kids rampaged through the dark booths that were splattered with globs of mashed potato and gravy. The balls of light, which floated over the tables like fallen stars in the place of candles, wore strings of asparagus like freaky wigs.

Wee vampires, shifters, and angels played chase around a floor that was covered in overturned plates of food, or peekaboo under tables.

I grinned, thrumming with joy.

I’d finally found them: the Great Satan’s Paranormal Army!

Just think, if I trained these kids young, how easy it’d be to use them to help me take over the world.

Wait, I got a wee bit carried away there. Pretend you didn’t hear that.

My grin faded.

Was my smug smile of the innocent too premature? Could I be blamed for this after all? Here’s the thing of it, I had been plotting my Paranormal Army, ever since I’d been created. Of course, I did have a lot of plots. Still, what if my schemes were magically coming to life?

I almost felt sorry for the world.
