A Dragon’s Lair

Dahlia Rose

The columns at the Paladin court were older than even the king could remember and the massive throne room could hold a large group in either human or dragon form. The dragon dialect was an old one. Humans would not even be able to discern the syllables. Everyone stood in their human guise before the king on his throne. He was a dragon of over two thousand years old and yet he looked to be fifty-five as a human. His dark brown hair was streaked with silver. He could still fight with the best of them; no one dared challenge his power and no one ever would. When his time of passing came, Orin would take his place and another would be chosen to make the twelve warriors. That was their way.

When Daisye and Hawke arrived, the men and women separated. The men had business to attend to with the king. Hawke greeted his brothers in arms. Raul was the youngest of the twelve. Lleau had greeted them at the entrance to the portal. Erik was the studious one who fought with words as well as a sword. Aki had a magic touch whose healing had aided them all.

Bior could wound an opponent with brute strength or through the many contraptions he made. He loved the earthly realm and could almost always be found tinkering with new inventions. Gaerar had a temper that could be as fierce as a lion in battle, yet the gentleness he had with his animals and the ones that were drawn to him showed a calmness inside him that no one would guess existed. Iarl was an enforcer. When there was trouble, he could slip in and out without being seen despite his large size. His martial art skills in human form somehow crossed over into his dragon form and he could maneuver in ways no other dragon could.

Mursi practiced meditation and loved the gardens on earth and in Paladin. He created hybrid flowers with amazing colors, yet he fought with a warrior heart and would fight to the last breath for his brothers. He was married to Lleau’s sister and they had two sons that grew up in Paladin. Skard loved children and a good joke. He was known always as the trickster. No one would be surprised to see him rolling around in the grass with his children after he settled down and had a family. Finally, there was Orin and Kalv, both of whom were married to human wives.

Orin’s wife, Valencia, had just recently given birth to a daughter and Kalv 36

said he was quite content on having kids much later. Hawke laughed internally thinking about the fierce warrior who just came back to the fold as a father. It would sure set him off balance.

The court convened with the king pounding his fast on the side arm of his throne. All talk ceased and they looked to their leader to hear his words.
