Chapter Twelve

CILLIAN

There was a rage within me that I’d thought I had under control, but the moment I even thought Dawsyn was in danger…I’d been ready to kill without question. Never mind that I hadn’t sensed any real threats from either of the wolf shifters. I still hadn’t wanted them near my mate.

She was asking me to be kinder, but when I’d taken more time to think before, she’d been hurt. I couldn’t let that happen again. I couldn’t be responsible for more harm falling upon Dawsyn. I wouldn’t survive that.

Protecting her, no matter who had to die in the process, was all I could offer. At least, for now.

Though, after hearing out the guards and learning that they worked under Dawsyn’s family, I was attempting to find a way to understand where she was coming from.

Except having additional help didn’t mean we were safe, which meant I couldn’t soften the way she requested. Not until we were out of the horrid swamp and away from all the things that wanted to kill us.

Thank fuck murderous animals like the ones spoken about here didn’t exist in Drago, at least in the parts nearest to town.

We began to climb trees, but we could only do that for so long or we’d never find the mushroom. I passed that thought along to Dawsyn.

“I can only focus on one thing at a time here,” she said, voice confident. “Avoiding snakes and killer turtles and alligators hiding in the water holds priority until we get to another bigger patch of land.”

I grinned, enjoying how unafraid she was of her weaknesses. She owned them instead of letting them own her.

“Fuck a duck!” she screeched, then slipped from the branch she was holding, but caught herself on the next one down with just one hand. “Snake. Big fucking snake.”

Maybe I’d thought too soon…or she’d summoned the very thing she’d just been hoping to avoid.

“And an alligator beneath you,” I growled. “Don’t you fucking let go, Dawsyn.”

“Wasn’t planning on it, Dear.” Her mocking tone made me think she was trying to lighten the situation, but once again, my mate was mere feet from having serious damage done to her.

I scented death before I heard the rustle of branches move. “We’re not alone.”

“No shi—fuck.” Dawsyn must have realized I wasn’t talking about the animals, because instead of dangling herself further away from the massive python that was inching closer to her, she flung her legs up to the branch and was trying to crawl back toward me.

Only, neither of us was fast enough. I was only halfway toward her when a figure blurred into the picture, wrapped his arms around her upper half, and pulled her into the murky waters.

“No!” I roared. Any control I had over my dragon was shattered. Shifting out here wasn’t ideal, but nothing was going to hurt me in my dragon form, and I needed to kill whoever thought they could touch my mate.

Though, at the last minute, I stopped the full shift,
