* * * *

Jordan tightened his hands so hard they hurt, but he had to. He wanted to reach for Caelan, to pull him up into his lap and to shield him from Priska, but he’d promised he wouldn’t interrupt, and he’d meant it. He didn’t want to screw things up, not when this was so important. It was hard to watch, though.

Caelan’s face was screwed up in pain, tears leaking from his eyes. His back was ramrod straight, and he’d buried his hands into his T-shirt when Priska had started whatever it was she was doing.

It didn’t look like much. She was still sitting in front of Caelan, her gaze fixed on him. It was vacant, as though she was seeing something Jordan couldn’t, and he supposed she was. Her lips were moving, but she didn’t make any sound. She’d touched Caelan’s forehead in the beginning, but her hands were in her lap now, twitching.

Fuck. Jordan hated waiting, but this situation was worse than anything he’d ever gone through. There was no way he’d be able to go back to his life before Caelan. Not that he’d really thought he would, but now he realized that even if he tried, he wouldn’t manage.

He cared too much.

He hadn’t seen it coming. He hadn’t seen Caelan coming. He still wasn’t sure what it was about him that had drawn him in without him even noticing, but he didn’t want to fight it. He’d never wanted that, not even when he’d realized he was falling for a demon.

Who cared?

Well, Jordan’s boss would. He’d probably have to quit his job, but the thought wasn’t as terrifying as it had been before. Jordan wasn’t sure why—his job was his life, or it had been, anyway. He had never had much outside it. A few friends, his apartment, and that was it.

Then he’d met Chase, who’d come with a bunch of friends and family, most of them demons or part demon. Jordan should have run the other way, but he found that if he had to choose—and he would have to—friends and Caelan would definitely win. He was going to have to find another job, but he couldn’t bring himself to care, especially not with Caelan writhing in pain next to him. Surely Jordan could at least try to comfort him, right? Priska had just told him not to try to stop her, not to stay away.

Jordan gently touched Caelan’s shoulder, and when he didn’t push Jordan’s hand away, he clutched at Caelan’s shoulder, rubbing his thumb on the skin of Caelan’s neck. He couldn’t tell if he was helping, but there was nothing else he could do.

Caelan jerked and the air around them changed.

Jordan couldn’t see Caelan, but he didn’t need to in order to know what was happening, especially not when he heard Caelan say, “You’re not strong enough, bitch.”

Jordan shuddered in horror. He recognized the voice, and it wasn’t Caelan’s, even though it came from his body. Priska didn’t react, and Jordan hated feeling useless.
