Chapter Eleven

Tobal stared at the piece of paper on the small table in his living area. He usually kept the table empty, mostly because he didn’t own many things. That was starting to change now that he had space and money to buy himself trinkets, but when he’d left his rooms this morning, the table had been empty.

It wasn’t anymore.

He wanted to see what was on the piece of paper, but he was also afraid. Its presence meant the society had found an easy way into his rooms, again, which meant he didn’t feel safe here. Clearly, they could come in whenever they wanted, whether he was in or not. What if they decided to sneak in during the night while he was sleeping? They probably wouldn’t kill him for now, since they wanted to use him, but it was still terrifying to know someone could be there, watching him while he was at his most vulnerable.

But he couldn’t continue staring forever. If the piece of paper was what he thought, he needed to tell Lon. They were working together now, which meant they had to do this together.

It was odd. Tobal wasn’t used to working with anyone, let alone a guy who knew what he was doing. Lon had been clear that he wanted to be involved, and Tobal was happy about that. It made him feel safer, and it felt good to know he wasn’t facing this on his own. He’d been alone most of his life, and it was nice to be able to rely on someone.

Sucking in a breath, he looked around the room one last time. It was empty except for him. The doors that led to the garden were open, and a slight breeze came through them. From where he was, Tobal could see desert plants and sand, a few paths, and even a bench just outside his room.

The door that led into the hallway was behind him and closed. He hadn’t locked it when he’d come in, and he was kind of afraid of doing so. What if there was someone in here with him? He could kill them like he had last time, but they could be stronger than him, so he needed an easy way to escape. He was becoming paranoid, and while he didn’t like it, he didn’t see a way out of it until the society was dealt with.

It was one more reason for him to want that. He needed to feel safe, and he wouldn’t as long as the society was sniffing around him.

Shaking his head, he stepped toward the table. The piece of paper didn’t move. It was there, still and silent, waiting for him, and he hated it. He snatched it up and glared at it, not one bit surprised to see the symbol that belonged to the society drawn there. He’d known this was them without having to see it. He’d hoped for it, but now that it had happened, he wanted to throw up.

He unfolded the piece of paper.
