Morgan

The smell of smoke jerked me awake. It yanked me out of my dreams and had me on my feet in an instant. I turned back to reach for Vi, but she wasn’t there anymore. I knew that I’d fallen asleep in her lap. I hadn’t imagined that.

“What are you up to now?” I asked my missing mate.

The smell of smoke didn’t bode well. If she’d snuck off to do something stupid, I would…hold her so tight that she could never escape me again. I had to keep an eye on that woman at all times.

The sound of sirens grew close. They drew me out of the house, so I could see a column of smoke rising to the sky. My stomach flipped, but I ignored my own trepidation and ran towards the fire.

Careful to stay out of the view of the firefighters and onlookers, I crept up behind the house. From here, I could see a window open, smoke pouring out.

This wasn’t Vi’s fault. There was no way that Vi would have set a neighbor’s house on fire. Vi was unpredictable and reckless, but she wasn’t inconsiderate. She wanted to protect everyone other than herself. That left only one other explanation, but I couldn’t wrap my mind around why demons would set a random house on fire.

When I scented the air, the smoke made me cough. Beneath the bitter smell, I caught Vi’s scent. She was here. My stomach dropped when I realized she wasn’t among the onlookers. Vi had gone inside.

What was she doing inside?

The house shook as something inside fell. The tremble rattled me. It yanked me forward. There were humans getting the firehose ready out front. I had to move fast, so they couldn’t see me. My mate’s name hung on my lips. I didn’t call out until I’d climbed through the window.

Vi pulled a small form close to her chest as she turned towards me. She cradled the form’s head protectively. Between us was a mound of charred wood with a strange creature standing atop the heap.

I blinked at the creature. There was a moment where my mind refused to process what I was seeing. The creature turned in on itself, ever moving. I realized that the thing was made of flames. Once it unwound itself and leapt onto the nearby cabinets, I could see that it took the shape of a cat, a really long one with extra sets of legs.

The creature looked to me and flicked its tail. I couldn’t figure out if it was happy or angry. I’d never been good with cats. I was more of a dog kind of guy.

“Vi,” I said, calling her attention to me. “What the hell am I looking at?”

“Why do you think I would know?” she cried out.

Her voice was hoarse. Despite the shirt tied around her face, she’d been breathing the smoke in for too long. Not even the layers could save her from this hellish inferno.

“It’s kind of cute,” she added.

I rolled my eyes.
