STARLIGHT HOTEL

Later that evening I sat in my hotel room enjoying my first cigarette in several weeks as I looked out the window at the stars. The sun had faded into the horizon and dominion of the sky had been handed off to the moon. My exhaled smoke hung luminous in the air outside my window before drifting into the path of the wind and being swept away out of sight.

Thinking of the days when I would enjoy moments like this all the time made me a little sad, but I had traded this lifestyle for another one. A better one. My husband was right to insist that I leave cigarettes behind, and that I make an effort to better myself before we had children. He had made significant efforts to do the same, with how he had quit drinking so that it was only a monthly thing. But still, there was something missing from our lives as we began to settle down, as we began to prepare for the long haul toward parenthood, and toward true adulthood.

He had been busy with several work issues this weekend, otherwise he almost definitely would have joined me on this trip. But while such an offer would almost certainly hold a guarantee for sex in each of our minds, I had reason to believe that neither of us would have been able to motivate such a thing to happen this evening. It seemed as though by losing our vices, we may have also, accidentally lost a certain flair for life.

But I was being melodramatic. Maybe we were just going through a slump.

In either case, I was determined to enjoy this weekend, and I had no reason to believe that my husband would ever find out about it, so I wasn’t concerned about the decision I was making as I finished my cigarette and prepared to leave the room. I suppose another person, a better person than myself, would have felt guilty, but in all honesty, I really didn’t. Maybe that’s because I hadn’t done it yet, because it was still just a tempting idea in my mind. But the idea was growing, and as I put my clothes back on and left the room, it became more and more real with each step that I took down to the lobby.

There was a lounge with a bar just to the left of the main entrance. There were a few people there currently, couples enjoying a drink before heading up to their rooms together. And there was a patio through a set of wide glass doors, where guests were permitted to smoke if they followed the patio around the side of the building. I went to the bar and ordered myself a drink, a rum and coke, and then took my drink outside with me. There was no one else on the patio at the moment, and so I intended to enjoy a cigarette alone around the corner. The remainder of the patio around the corner was out of sight.
