CHAPTER ELEVEN

Sullivan

After being held in this fucking jail for almost 48 hours, I was finally released. I knew they were going to have to release me though because I didn’t kill Candace. That ain’t my fucking DNA under her fingernails. They better find out who it is. When I was told that I was free to go, I almost shitted on me. Being locked up ain’t no joke. Thank God none of these niggas fucked with me. I didn’t want to have to hurt nobody.

When I was taken downstairs, my lawyer was waiting for me. I got my possessions from the officer behind the gated room and walked up outta there with the biggest smile on my face.

“Thanks,” I say to my lawyer.

“You’re welcome. I didn’t really do anything though. It wasn’t your DNA,” he says.

“Right, but you had to push them in order for them to get the results that fast. Usually, it takes up to a week to get DNA results, so thanks,” I say again.

“No problem,” he says, “Now you just need to stay out of trouble until your trial.”

“I will,” I tell him.

“Do you need a ride home?” he asks.

“You don’t mind?”

“No, I can take you,” he offers.

“Thanks,” I say as we walk towards his car.

On the drive to my house, we talk about me staying out of trouble and the case. He says that since the DNA came back and it didn’t match mine, he could get those charges dropped. He also said that since there have been some new developments in the case, he could most likely get all charges against me dropped except the charge against Erica. He said I may have to cop a plea deal on that one, if she would agree to it.

“What new developments have happened in the case?” I ask.

“Just watch the news tonight,” he says.

“What happened?” I ask.

“Just watch the news,” he says.

“Okay. Look, thanks for working so hard on my case. I know this can’t be easy, so I appreciate all you’re doing to help me,” I say as he pulls into the driveway of my home.

“You’re welcome. Look, just keep your nose clean. You’re almost free,” he says.

“Thanks,” I say as I open the door.

I get out the car and head inside, happy to be home. My phone was off when I retrieved it from the property guard and I haven’t bothered to turn it on yet. The only person that is probably trying to reach me is my mom anyway and it ain’t that important for me to talk with her. Every time she calls, all she wants is money to go gambling any damn way.

I unlock the door and walk inside, relieved to finally be home. I don’t know what my attorney was talking about when he said there have been new developments in the case, but since he said to watch the news, that’s what I’m going to do. I check the time and it says 11:45 AM. Our local news comes on at noon so I will watch it at that time.
