Chapter 9

Summer arrived a little after three Saturday afternoon to begin preparations for the party. Her stomach was doing a three-step. She couldn’t believe she was this nervous. Sin had never returned her call—which confirmed her suspicion that he regretted the kiss.

If she didn’t strongly feel that he was trying to be noble, she would really be annoyed with him. After waiting thirty years for a man to make her weak in the knees, forget to breathe with a kiss, she was anxious for more of the same.

Her hand gripped the overnight case in one hand, the padded hangers with her clothes for the party in the other. Party first, and then she was going to get herself another kiss—and if she was lucky, maybe a lot more.

Blushing and grinning, she pushed the doorbell and prepared herself for the punch of seeing Sin again … if he didn’t chicken out and stay in his home office.

The door opened. Sin stood there, his handsome fallen-angel face set. Her heart thudded. Looks like no kiss.

“Hi, Sin.” Summer greeted him with a cheery smile despite the growing nervousness in her stomach. She stepped past him into his penthouse. “The florists should be here within the hour. “No, but I could probably get someone,” he said without skipping a beat.

She’d punch him if he didn’t look so miserable. “Who? Where?”

“I could probably make a few phone calls.”

Stubborn man, but then so was she. “Haven’t you learned yet?”

A frown worked its way across his brow. “Learned what?”

“I’m a one of a kind.” She turned and headed for the stairs. “I’ll put my things in the guest bedroom and be right back.” At the top of the stairs she stopped and stared back. He hadn’t moved. Her heart went out to him. “It will be all right, Sin.”

“I’ll be in my office.” He turned and headed across the expanse of imported Italian tile.

Summer stared after him for a moment, then continued up the stairs. She had a party to put together.

With so many people there to assist Summer, Sin stayed in his office. He only emerged to answer the door as different services came and went. Summer had been right: He would have been lost in directing everyone. She did it effortlessly and always with a smile.

As the evening lengthened, he had to admire the way the place came together with the addition
