Chapter 15

Declan

Later that night the four of us are sitting in the living room with takeout, and it feels like the first normal in a long, long time. Nev is curled up in the oversized chair, Kai is sitting cross-legged on the floor, and Luca is on the couch, knees falling to the side, while I sit on the arm next to him.

Luca, Kai, and I have spent many nights here, just like this–eating takeout and drinking beer. But even on the nights where we managed to laugh, there was always something missing. She was missing. Now that she’s back, I never want her to leave again, and I will do anything to make sure she stays with us where she’s meant to be.

Even though our friendship is far from what it once was, I can’t help but feel as if it’s moving to someplace new and that connection we shared…that kinetic energy in the air when we were together, is still there. Still palpable.

I wish we could spend more nights just like this. Making up for lost time, and bad decisions, with takeout from our favorite spot. But there’s no time for a slow build back to trust. We have seven weeks until the social eclipse, and so much needs to be done. There’s no more time for games. Starting tonight, she must be in this with us, come hell or highwater.

Still, I can’t help but want to stay in this moment forever. It’s what I’ve wanted for so long. All of us, together as family.

“Man, I missed this.” Nev digs her chopsticks in the carton of noodles in her hand and twirls them before lifting to take a bite.

“What, there’s no Chow Mein in Paris?” Kai winks, digging into the carton of Sweet n’ Sour Chicken he’s holding.

“Sure,” she swipes a delicate finger across her mouth. “But not like these. Nothing is like Lizzie’s.”

“Well, it’s a good thing Mr. Money swooped in when he did, or that box in your hand right now, would have been a slice of pizza.”

Nev shakes her head, confused. “Lizzie’s had some financial trouble a few years ago,” Kai explains, “so Declan bought it. In fact, we used to get it every weekend,” Kai takes another bite. “But we stopped because—”

Luca throws a pillow and hits Kai in the chest, cutting him short.

“Dude,” he swallows. “You almost made me spill on my Mastermind hoodie.”

“Wait,” Nev looks from Kai to Declan. “You bought Lizzie’s?”

“Guilty,” I nod, digging into the carton in my hand.

She looks at me as if I’m a mystery she’s trying to solve. “But, why?”

“They have the best noodles,” I shrug. “And you know the rules, Luca. Don’t mess with Kai’s hoodies. He’s only got a hundred.”

“A hundred,” Kai scoffs. “You better dial that number up, brother. And you did get sauce on my hoodie, you dick.” He takes the pillow Luca threw at him and throws it back.

“Sorry,” Luca shrugs. “I’ll buy you a new one.”

“Going to Japan anytime soon? Because it’s one of a kind that I had made just for me.
